    Posted: 09 Feb 2019 at 9:57pm
I have spent many summer days working in hay with an Allis 170 Diesel. After some gear jumping, we opted to get a new JD instead of replacing the transmission on the Allis. Someone has asked us if we would sell the tractor. I am just looking for someone who has some knowledge of the value of the tractor. It is a 1970 model with 2500 hours. Motor runs great. Needs a transmission and could use some new brake pads on the back. Rubber is in good shape. Any info would be appreciated.

Pics would be helpful to see exactly what it looks like it. Nice operating ones depends where your at. ranges 5-8000. Trans being out on yours i would guesstimate 2-4000. Like say depends on what it looks like

My brother in law bought a farm two years ago and it came with a 175 gas and 180 diesel. Neither trackor would stay in 3rd. He sold the 180 and loader for $7500 and the 175 for $5500. Sure surprised me.

According to Norm Swinford, the 170 is mostly a D17 in a new dress. I'd think a D17 transmission would fit, yes? I don't know how easily or cheaply the collars could be replaced, but if you want a hobby to finish out the winter....

A lot depends on the location.  In our area, a 170 (or 175, 180 or 185) with a good transmission is lucky to bring $3000.

Nothing easy about replacing collars in the transmission.  Still requires a complete teardown.  It's not just collars you have to replace.  Some gears and bearings will be needed as well.  I've been down this road 3 times in the past.  Still waiting for my mechanic to get the 59 D14 back together...

Back to the original post, I would estimate the value of the tractor at around $3000 as is, but without pictures it is subject to change.  Those gears must have been ground constantly to be jumping out of gear at 2500 hours though!

Here is a link to some pics. Has more hours than I thought. last couple of years was used to blow silage. Before that I used it to fluff, rake, and pull wagons. Good strong motor. Copy the following link and insert into your address bar to view pics.

Decent looking 170. Will the tractor pull itself ? Does it just jump out of certain gears, or is the tranny completely out ?

Runs.  Has a good strong motor.  Jumps out of 3rd, and jumped a few times out of 4th. That is when we decided to upgrade.  Continued to use it to blow silage.  I miss the hand clutch when raking hay.  We bought it new in 1972.

Two ways to look at this -  if you put in a D17 IV to another 175 rear end or fix yours - you are going to "have more in it " that what it will bring more than likely if you hire it done. The other way is to look at it from the perspective of what will I have in it vs. what will a like unit to replace it cost ?    Today we have to make those decisions constantly as the fleet ages of all brands.  As a dealer we have to look at it in the first case - as a producer we find we can take something like a 170 or 175 - and afford to have 6-8 grand in it if the engine is sound as you state to take to the farm.  Those were perfect hay / chore tractors where clutch slippage was required.  It is a shame so many are out there and not operated properly.  We still have units with hand clutches brought in for foot clutch replacement - and when we ask why they don't use the hand clutch they answer "mine doesn't have one"....
When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money..

Bought a D15 SFW near Austin a few years back, older gentleman raised vegetables for Whole Foods and decided to retire. Took the old gal down a grade and up the other side repeatedly throttling up/down in 2nd and 3rd while playing with the hand clutch to see how crisp it was.
Came back to start negotiating and asked him how the front cowling became so dented near the top. He pointed to the only tree you could see for likely a mile or more, a giant Oak and said he ran into it because the brush cutter pushed him into it.
He then said he had a question for me; "what was that handle on the right that you kept playing with while you drove the tractor?"
Said he owned the tractor for years and never touched it.
And yes, jumped 3rd gear pretty easily.
