In reading a previous post about how the One-Ninety's PD H/L console control varied from the later 200's models got me thinking. AC's Power-Director H/L component really made a huge impact from it's origins of 1957's D series tractors. It was then utilized into the mid 1960's horsepower wars of the 100 series tractors. Next, it found its way into the 1973's 7000 series Computer-controlled flexible machine center which produced heavier power trains. Finally, it culminated into the 1985's 8000 series & big 4W305 tractors. What a legacy!

I read an article about the guy who worked at Ford and tried to implement powershift for them and got disgruntled and went to John Deere, if I remember correctly. I didn't realize Allis pd went back to 50s. I suspect someone has posted difference between JD powershift and Allis pd but I am curious and will research.

The D-series  Power Director clutch was next-generation of the WD/WD45 hand clutch. It was mechanical, provided on-the-go shifting (to compete with the IH Torque-Amplifier), and was the PTO's live power that could tolerate a lot of creeping/start-stop abuse. The One-Hundred series was just a hydraulic/self-adjusting version of the D-series Power Director clutch. The 7000 and 8000 series was totally a different design and just utilized the "Power-Director" name only to set it apart from the Power Shift transmission.

The engineer who designed the Ford Select-O-Speed needed another year of testing before it was ready to market but Ford couldn't wait and fired him. He went to John Deere and finished the design and that is the JD 8 speed power shift. His name is Harold ---
and there is an interview with him by Machinery Pete before he passed away a few years ago in his mid ninety's. Very interesting.
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed
