 Topic: A-C seed plates for sweet corn

I've had a few offers to plant sweet corn with my four row planter this coming spring and was wondering if anybody here can recommend a good A-C planter plate for sweet corn? I think these are model 74 units on this planter. The smallest corn seed plate that came with the planter is...well, I thought I had my book in the house but it's out in the pickup and it's to cold to go out there. I have the plates 300106 and 300107 but I think they will be too big for the sweet corn seed. Any help or advice would be appericiated. Thanks.

I've seen sweet corn seed of all sizes lately. I had a sample last year that I had to plant by hand it was so big a kernal....my usual variety is so small it likes to plant 2 at a time with what looks like a standard field corn plate. My dad had a tall skinny bucket clear full of plates at one time....I need to look for it sometime when I get back home.

Try lincoln ag in Neb.
Should have them. If not, try ebay. I just bought 2 sets of four
for a 449 IH planter. They will probably be used and fiber glass.
Nice looking planter.

John Deere plates will work too, if you have the adapter for it. I think you already know this only a suggestion.

oldoug I have that exact planter. I usually plant 3 types of different corn and they all take different plates. I like a seed every 6 inches. The newer super sweets last year had an amazingly small seed. My 82 day corn seed looked about the same as the 88 day, however when I spun the drive wheel with a collection pan under the drop tube I needed to change plates. Then for the silver queen I had to get really larger plates.I have probably 15 sets of 4 and as I say all kinds take different plates.

oldoug i just went into the pole shed to check plates. last year I used [lustran] #B2-24, and two other Lustran B2- [some other numbers]. Lustran plates are a magenta colored plastic and you need to get the center adaptors. The silver queen needed metal Allis Chalmers #309431 last year, but I am warning you the year before last the same seeds needed different plates! I wrap a measuring tape around the drive rubber and think I averaged it to 5 feet. So one rev I would like 10 seeds to drop into my pan. I put a dab of spit [lol] on the drive wheel for a referance mark and spin 4 times, then count and get an average looking for 6 inch spacing. Every years seed sizes are different and need calibration and plate changes. HTH Dana

Matt, I have a fair selection of plastic plates, I match up the seed size to the plate when Im ready to plant. Like Dana said, every year is different. HTH

My planter doesnt work well on the small amount I plant.. not enough seed in planter. So I adjusted planter to make rows then plant and cover by hand. More work.. better crop. Brian S

Lustran is the kind of plastic Lincoln Ag makes their plates from. All different colors. I ordered popcorn plates from them a few years back. If all sizes and cell counts fail you, Lincoln Ag used to have blanks and you could file or dremel the cells in to suit your seed size.

Brian I hear ya man. Ya almost gotta put 5 pounds in each hopper to cover the plates. When they get low I stop every 50 feet and recover the plates. After a few times then yeah, the seeds come out and are planted by hand. For a couple acres worth of ground this works ok, but one needs lots of seeds!

Matt those are 72 units arent they?? 74 had the smaller roller chain on them. But I dont want to argue with a man of your position........lol

I dont even think they are 72 with the hand crank for the depth instead of the plate and hairpin?? I need to check but the plates are all the same. Ryan

LOL ryan you are right on the units. I was looking at the square chain. I dont think the 72 units came out until the 600 frames.
