they tend to rope the hay. I use one and 200 is a good deal but if you are planning on doing more than a couple of acres, the new holland rakes are a good investment

I had one for many years and it was all I ever had. If you're twisting a rope, it's not adjusted properly. The manual explains how to properly set the pitch of the teeth. They will do a nice job of raking or tedding on well prepared ground that is smooth, without ridges or ditches. The main problem is they will break the gearbox easily if the slip clutch is adjusted too tight or the drive chain is too loose. Gearbox & driveshaft parts are slim to none, as well as are many other parts. Newer rakes would have better parts availability.
On the plus side, if you're raking 2 windrows together for a Roto-Baler they will be straighter and more consistent, because of the length and the fixed wheel at the rear.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

I raked hundreds of acres of hay with one in the 60, 70. And 80's. They are a good rake as long as you have level ground. Most still use the ball and socket hitch.
