I've really never understood how A.C. ever recouped their money on R+D for the 7000 series and the 8000 series,, they never sold many units compared to other companies,,, they were ahead of their time in many ways, but how could they justify the low sales?

Tractordata.com also lists an all crop tractor at 34hp made in 1931 but I can't find pictures of it.

Of actual production tractors I would guess a 6-12 or 10-18 but I'm just guessing without doing any research.

Those were prototypes, they do not count.  We are referring to actual production tractors here.
Surprised no one mentioned the 100 220s with FWA.  Some others would include the asparagus and potato versions of the B (although production numbers are not known, very few are known to exist).

How about the GR made in France? Or the, I suppose prototype, "Bull Moose" 4WD built in the 1950's.

The 7000 and 8000 series used a lot of common parts between each different model and they were popular in my area.

Somewhere I think I heard that there are only 2 Industrial 6-12's known to exist - I don't know how many were made though.

Our engineering dept. was far smaller than Deere's (and likely IH's).  I had a college friend who was the manager of Deere's hydraulic engineering group.  He had more people working for him than I did in the total tractor engineering group.

Also, the flexible machining center (FMC) that was installed for the 7000 Series allowed many different castings to be machined economically-----------------and allowed changes to be made to the machining easily.

From a profit stand point, the biggest albatross was the Harvey plant.  The prices that we paid (transferred) to Harvey were higher than what we could have bought engines on the open market for.  On top of that, I don't think there would have been as much warranty problem.

Thanks for the reply Mark, makes sence as Allis invested in some good equipment bringing the 7000, 8000 series to life in West Allis and keep the cost as low as they could, it all helps to realize the functions of a factory and the parts etc, sounds like Harvey was just another mismanaged part of Allis Chalmers

There probably wasn't enough engine volume with ag and construction to keep Harvey going long term as diesel engine technology grew in the 70's and 80's.  However, Harvey only hastened their decline by trying to get into the on-highway truck engine business.  This only diluted the resources available for the ag engines.

That was a huge flop for sure,, putting that hunk of cast iron inbetween frame rails of a semi without on road support and didn't they keep turning them up to see what they would do,,, you know independent mechanics had those things signing ,,,, till they blew up, then the bad reviews came out I'm sure

To me, production numbers would be for each tractor, say a 190. High crop ,industrial, beach master ,narrow front ,gas diesel, propane, snap coupler, 3 point, bare back. There all a 190. And different versions of the 190. I would guess that is what was meant by the question.

How about a D-17 Grove tractor - not orchard. I've never seen one or even a picture but listed in the parts and price book.  I have one.
