When I got my D17 a couple years ago it didn't have a speedometer cable and I didn't think much about it until I read the owners manual which said I needed oil in the distributor housing area by removing a square cap.  I did this to the recommended level and I found the oil would run out of where the speedometer cable was supposed to be attached.  I did a quick fix and put a baby pacifier over the threads which has worked for 3 years or so, but was looking for a better solution.  I don't need a speedometer cable for what I do with this tractor and was just looking for ideas for a fix.

When they didn't have a tachometer (an option) that big hex plug was just a plug to keep the oil in. That oil leak is probably because there are things worn out where the tach cable connects. You might take it apart and see if there is a worn out Oring on the output shaft.
