Gentleman: Am seeking guidance or input on a D14 question. I have a D14 with a Henry 14 foot hoe on it. The serial number of the machine puts it being produced sometime in 1958. The machine is not equipped with a power director or shuttle clutch just a 4 speed similar to the CA set up or early D10/D12's and appears to be factory original. I purchased the machine from the original owner who bought it new from Urgo's Farm Supply - Frank G. Potenza Allis Chalmers Dealer in Frankfort NY.
My research and discussions thus far lead me down the road that AC did not document at least through Dealer Parts manuals some of the various "as equipped" utility/light industrial designs since AC at that time was just entering the backhoe/forklift - light industrial business. My thinking is that there were machines built and sold for which the AC Design and Engineering Department did not elect to document. Perhaps production numbers were low and Engineering knew that the Design would be changed at a later date to include a shuttle shift. Another thought the crossed my mind is that the Henry Corporation was building and selling the same backhoe and that the backhoe that I have was a dealer add on to the D14, that would be entirely possible since the paint under the AC orange is International Red. But why would all the D14 Illustrated parts manuals only show the power director transmission parts and not the shuttle or 4 speed? Anyone have a D14 Illustrated Parts manual that shows a transmission schematic with just a 4 speed? I hope I have included this in the correct section of the forum, as the D14 goes with the farm equipment side, although the hoe would go on the Industrial/CMD side of things. Am open to insights and suggestions on why there is no parts catalogs that deal with the D14 Utility tractor 4 speed transmission? Orangeman

Might it be the same as the 4 speed used in the D-10/12 ?
I have a '65 D-10 series III with the hi/lo in front of the 4 speed transmission. Dusty

The transmission is the same regardless if it had a power director, shuttle shift or neither one. Shuttle shifts were not an option for ag tractors at that time. Power directors WERE an option - not standard equipment. I replaced the transmission in my 59 D14 with a transmission from an industrial model. I just had to add the bearings to accommodate the PTO shaft (which did not come on the industrial model I got it from). The power director (or shuttle) goes on the input shaft OUTSIDE of the transmission.

Myron Where did you come up with the idea that Power Director was an Option? P/D was part of the Sales Promotion when D-14 and D-17 came out in 1957. I haven't seen any P/D Delete info in the Part's Catalog either. G Fast forward to around 26 min. in this 1957 Allis Promotional Film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buD_X3JcLvw |

Gary, I have the 1957 price book which shows it as an option. Not to put words in his mouth, but Calvin also mentioned it as well.
I am sure there were not many sold without the power director though. |

I wouldn't have 1 D-14, let alone 3, if it didn't have the 'big Stick' !

Thanks Myron That's a new one on me. Perhaps it was only in Utility Tractor line, and not Farm Tractor. Gary |
