I have been chasing a small coolant leak at the front of my B mower tractor for some time. Things were hard to see with all the sheet metal on, and the dirt and grease. Thought it was from the thermostat housing and resealed it twice and replaced the thermostat housing bottom plate, no help. Finally traced it down to a hairline crack on the side of the head inlet below the thermostat housing. I have ground down the area and applied J-B Weld and will see if that works. I don't want to remove the head if I don't have to as mowing season will soon be here. 2 in of snow today yuk

A few years ago, I bought a WD that had a cracked block (behind the carburetor, where many of them crack) that continually leaked coolant.
I have a neighbor (and friend) that is a really good welder, so I asked him to take a look at it. He told me to go to our local auto parts store and get their version of radiator stop leak. I followed the directions and it has never leaked since. I know a lot of guys say it will plug up a radiator, but I have had zero cooling problems. I remember, when I was a kid, that a lot of the old guys around here used ginger or pepper to stop coolant leaks.

30 some years ago my buddy got an 51 Deere A that had a bad head leak and he dumped a half can of black pepper in it----hasn't leaked since and he still uses the tractor every year. I prefer the stuff called aluma-seal, ----I works good too and no pluggin problems with it either.

I b ought an 83 Dodge Omni Charger about 1990 that had 100K on it. I had to put a timing belt on it, but it soon developed a leak in the head somewhere. I bought a little tube of silver powder stop leak and ran for 50K miles before I had to add another tube.
I put 112K miles on that thing in 10 years and only made about 2 car payments worth of investment. |
