as stated, it is split - replace input shaft seal and gasket - rear main and wear sleeve - and clutch pp and brgs... do it right and you are good for 3000 hours + or - NOW, if one uses the hand clutch - power director- to start and stop - the clutch will last 10,000 hours..

First, Thank you for replying. I'm 68 years old and my memory isn't the best. When I used the tractor 2 winters ago it started to get noisey in the cold weather but the noise would leave in warm/summer weather. This past winter the noise returned.
When I would feed with the tractor in the winter I can not remember position of clutch but I believe the noise would be present when the clutch pedal was up not depressed.
Thanks for telling me about the clutch adjustment. I just read in the owners manual 2 1/2 " free travel.
I've been on tractors since I was 10 years old so I am not a pedal rider.
Since I have the tractor split right now I want to replace the seals and any parts that need replaced.

Let's ask you some questions. Why are you asking about a throw out bearing ? Why are you questioning clutch replacement ?? What issues does the clutch have on your 185 ?? I will tell you this: 90% of throw out bearing failures are from owners/operators not keeping the clutch pedal linkage ADJUSTED properly. There must always be free-play in the clutch pedal, a minimum of 2 inches or more. If there isn't any free-play, the poor throw out bearing is spinning all the time !!! and they don't last very long doing that. Free play disappears as the clutch wears and this is normal !!! But it must be adjusted once in a while. Keep your foot OFF the pedal when driving unless you are actually using the foot clutch. A properly adjusted and maintained clutch/throw out bearing usually lasts as long as the clutch, and if it doesn't quite last that long the clutch is mostly worn out anyway.

Thanks. Also, could I find instructions on disassembly of clutch for the 185? I never have done that. Does it take special tools for piolet bearing or alignment procedures? Should I be measuring plate thickness on clutch to see if it really need replaced? can the rear seal on the engine crank shaft be replaced on exterior of the block? Thanks in advance.

AGCO, bearing supply company, NAPA. Old school way is put it in road gear, stand on the brakes and let out the clutch. If you release the clutch and can't stall the engine then the clutch is slipping.

I agree with MACK. If you are in there to do one thing, do everything else! I would also do the rear seal on the engine and the oil seal on the clutch shaft while you have access to them. Don't want to have to do another split 6 months down the road!

If you replace clutch, replace pressure plate, throw out bearing, piolet bearing, and have flywheel resurfaced. No short cuts on those clutches. MACK
