I started my 175 up today. Ran on a few seconds. It will not hit at all now. Seems out of fuel. The lift pump on right side of engine doesn't seem to have much resistance when pumping by hand. Top of injector pump has fuel on it. I didn't loosen any lines or mess with it much. Has a CAV pump on it. Tractor has 510 hours on it. Never a problem starting or running. Fuel cutoff seems to move in and out OK. What is most likely culprit? Thanks Tracy

510 hours, original tires on it too. Had a cab on it, took it off. Had 495 on it when I bought it several years ago. Tracy

Well with that low of hours and the age of the tractor I would lean on the side of a pump rebuild because it had to sit a lot and not used. Something to consider. Good luck. I love my 175 and had the pump and injectors rebuilt at 3014 hours.

Open the bleeders on the filters and try working the lift pump. If not getting fuel you may have a blockage. Check the sediment bowl on the tank. Make sure the shutoff is open.

I agree with Joe.  Could be rust in the tank plugging things up.

On the lift pump, how much resistance is in the stroke of pump? I only felt a little of resistance at the near very end of stroke. By it starting and running, it died like out of fuel. How does the metering valve work on a CAV pump? Thanks Tracy

Tracy, could be an air leak on the filter.  Mine had a bad filter gasket and when the tractor had one half tank of fuel the pump would lose prime setting over night.  I am wondering if mine will start now or run a few seconds since the tractor has not beem started since June of 2020.  Mine has two thousand hours and the injector pump was rebuilt around 1600 hours.  Capital Diesel told me that they deteriorate from age.  I like to start mine at least once a week, but since I was in the hospital from July 22 until Oct. 15 2020 I am still doing daily therapy so I will have strength to get on the tractor.  Improving, but a slow process.  I was told that the strength you lose in one day in the hospital will take ten to regain.

Always start at the fuel tank. Remove the sediment glass bowl. Turn on the petcock fully. There should be TWO STREAMS of fuel gushing from the base. If it just drizzles fuel straight down or doesn't flow fuel at all, the inlet to the sediment bowl base is plugged.

Dr. Allis, mine doesn't have a settling bowl on it.I was going to see if it was stopped up, but none there.  I will check the fuel stream this week hopefully. Looks like original filters on to me. Thanks Tracy

My lift pump has a screen inside
also if the hand pump has no resistance it might be on the high spot of the cam, turn the motor over

Parts book shows 2 depending on engine serial number.

My manual shows two also. Mine is like neither. I had turned engine over and stopped it several times. Lift pump is going thru stroke, doesn't seem to have as much resistance as one might think. I will take the lines loose and see what gives. Thanks Tracy

If the lift pump isn't pumping, it's likely not getting ample fuel from the tank, just as Dr stated. All diesel 170/175 use the CAV DPA pump on the 236/248 Perkins. It operates very similar to the Roosa found on AC engines.

Oh, and be aware that the filters on this setup can be confusing, many people lay a rubber seal ring inside the top lip of the filter element, blocking the fuel flow through the narrow gap on edge at the top. Older elements had holes in the top. No seal goes anywhere on the top, it goes in a groove in the header the lip goes against. There's several different seals with the element, for differing style bowls, water traps etc, not all need to be used. Seen this many times.

Update! I took the line off at lift pump. Plenty of fuel and steady stream. Open the bleed screw on pump and got lift pump to good stream there, then opened the bleed screw on cap, got good fuel there. cracked the injector lines, got Hannah to help with cranking over engine, started right up. The throttle shaft and cover are leaking some. Might be time for a seal kit on it, might of siphoned the fuel out and sucked enough air to kill it.  Thanks Tracy

Make sure the throttle shaft gets a new bushing as well as the seal. I put a electric fuel pump on my 175 and it makes it much easier to bleed the system. Good luck.

The throttle and shut-off leaks are very common on CAV pumps, and can indeed "let your finger off the straw" allow it to drain back and lose prime. The CAV DPA is one of the worse to bleed. The upper bleeder doesn't need fuel out of it to run, but the one closest to the name plate does indeed. Glad it's alive!
