If anyone has a 160 with a precleaner on it I would like to get some information on it. How it mounts with the tilt hood? From factory literature, it appears that is may unscrew first before the hood is raised? No longer available and have had zero luck finding a used one. I would like to add one to my 160.

Nice picture!!!! Where did ya get that?  Maybe just the bowl comes off and the pipe is not attached to the hood at all. Kind of like late D17's.

I have flipped through that sales flyer a hundred times since you was so kind to send it to me! It does appear that it does not attach to the hood as I originally thought. Also the reason for the short pipe and oblong hole in the hood. I purchased a precleaner assembly from A&I and it looks very close to the one in the flyer. Only dislike is it is made completely of plastic except for the bolt that goes up through the center. I would think the original base and top were metal. So my guess is that it screwed into a base pipe at the air cleaner. I’m going to look at AGCO books again to see if I can find the parts breakdown. I could not find it before. Very little info on these 160’s, quite disappointing. I have learned more from your sales literature than ever knew before! Thanks again KY Allis

Went back to AGCO books and all it shows is the pre cleaner assembly but nothing under the hood where it attaches to the air filter. So I’m envisioning a 90 degree rubber elbow with a short pipe extending through the hood. The pre cleaner is attached to the pipe with a clamp. Loosen the clamp, pull the pre cleaner off, lift the hood. Sound correct?

My operator's manual (form TM-514 10/71 S/N 0144045 and up).

Page39:
"If tractor is equipped with a pre-cleaner, it must be re-moved before hood can be raised."

Page 16:
Has pictures and instructions for cleaning the pre-cleaner bowl.  Images show two different designs.

I looked through the entire manual, could not see a picture showing the piping guts under the hood.

You are correct, the online parts book shows nothing below the pre-cleaner bowl.
Not in the air intake section nor the hood section.

Looks to me the air cleaner body is held by strap clamps and could be rotated, perhaps to allow the intake snout straight up, allowing a pipe from the pre-cleaner to connect.

I wonder if the pre-cleaner was a dealer installed accessory. Who knocked out the oval plug in the hood? Factory or dealer.

Wenger's has a few pre-cleaner parts and pictures.

Seems like a pain, is you hood missing the oval plug already?

Good luck.

My knock out is still in place. I just like the look and the added dirt collection the pre cleaner gives. The pre cleaner on my 190 and our 6060 catches quite a bit of stuff before it gets to the filter. I can see a clamp below the pre cleaner base in the picture so I’m like you Brian it definitely has to come off before lifting the hood. Also, it’s a short pipe, so my guess is that is attached to a 90 degree hose and stays on the pre cleaner. Was hoping someone has one to verify. I’ve seen pictures of plenty of 160 parts tractors on line but only 1 appeared to have the optional pre cleaner, and someone had already removed it. I know they are out there, just hoping someone sees my post and will snap a few photos for me. The parts book was disappointing to say the least. Whatever is under the hood, they must have thought it would last forever and no one would ever have to replace it lol !

there is just a riser  on the air cleaner canister, the hood has an oval shaped hole you have to pick off the pre cleaner before opening the hood, and the riser stays on the air cleaner canister.

Thank you for replying, would you mind taking a picture for me a under the hood shot of the elbow that attaches to the air cleaner assembly? It would be greatly appreciated. A measurement of the pipe if that’s not asking too much. You can solve the mystery for me!! Thank you in advance

Pm sent Kcgrain, thank you for taking the time to do this for me.
My guess would be this was a dealer option if the customer wanted one. Just a way a dealer could make some extra cash since it was so easy to install. Parts Dept probably ordered it or had one in stock in case a customer wanted one. Kinda like the dealer adding fluid to the tires after the sale or an umbrella as our dad had installed on his series II D15 when he bought it new in 1968. I’m only speculating of course, have no proof that’s the way they did it.

After looking at the hood knock out and the air cleaner, brother Charlie realized all that was needed to be done is loosen the 2 clamps securing the air filter housing and rotate it 90 degrees. The inlet is about 2 “ through the hood which works well, the hood can raise and lower with no issue. Had a short pipe fabricated to fit the inlet and the pre cleaner. 2.48” at the air filter inlet and 2.90” at the pre cleaner. Ran it 6 hours this afternoon and it worked well. Actually saw a dead bug go round and round in the pre cleaner as I mowed. It was actually quite funny, but it proved the rotation of air was working as it should. Was so simple that I over thought what was needed.
