I have a 1972  160 diesel that I resleeved. It started, got warm then re-torqued the head bolts. Started it up again, drove it for about 15-20 minutes and parked it. It was working fine. I installed a new ignition switch and glow plug, cranked it over and it just kept cranking. Don't like to but I gave it a shot of starter fluid and it did nothing to help. Mot even a spurt.
I'm at a loss to whats wrong. Cranks over. has fuel. ????? Anyone have any clues?

Do you get smoke when you crank it over? You will, if you actually have fuel.
You say you installed a new ignition switch — perhaps you didn’t get the wire to the diesel shutoff where it belongs.
Did you check the valve clearance after retorquing the head bolts?

Yes, there is smoke. Yes, checked valve clearance. I will re-check the wiring on the switch. Thanks for the reply. I'll let you know how I make out.

Checked wiring, everything checks out. I had replaced pre-heat elementas well and that checks out and working properly also. Could the fuel pump timing gotten out of sync somehow? The tractor was running after I had retorqued the head bolts before I parked it.

Pump has a cable to shut off right? Make sure you're in the run position at the pump, and the cable didn't slip out of position. If that's all correct, look at the bolts that drive the pump. Had one customer call me with a similar situation, and he must not have torqued the bolts properly, because they all 3 fell out! lol!

The only time my 160 failed to start (aside from dead battery), it involved the fuel shutoff. In my case it was internally gunked up and was stuck in off position.  I had no smoke during cranking.
I would crack loose the supply pipe at the injectors,  and visually verify each injector is getting fuel. If it is pumping, well today it will be 80 degrees, it should start.

A few things- This injection system is old school, all mechanical.
The glow plug is called Thermostart, an intake manifold pre-heater system. It is plumed into the fuel system. But I can't see how it's malfunction can cause loss of injection pump prime. Ether caused no reaction? Anyone ever seen that? There would have to be no compression.

Was running, shut off, worked on it, then tried starting? Or was this over the course of a few weeks/months? If it's sat, the pumping plungers could have stuck, thus not pumping. I've found many times that ether will only fire the engine if there's some fuel being injected, won't run on ether alone. My bet it the pump is no longer turning due to the bolts falling out. Gears rotating may have held it in place, but once shut off, you lost the retention from the helical gears, thus it just pushed away missing the little dowel.

Sorry for not getting back to anyone sooner.
I replaced the head gasket on it, started and ran fine, shut it down and retorqued the head bolts after it warmed up, restarted it and drove it for about 20 minutes, parked it and changed the ignition switch and then it would not start.

It is getting fuel. It cranks over ok. Switch wiring is correct. Fuel shut off is in correct position. Tried it when outside temp was sunny and hot. Still no start.

You sure your working with an Allis Chalmers 160 tractor? There is no preheat elements on a 160, it has a perkins diesel in them that used a flame thrower type preheater, which you might just as well unhook youll never use it.
