Forensic examination can get rather challenging. The perplexing part of THIS event, is that the INTAKE lobe was the one worn down, but the EXHAUST seat was the one that skipped out.  It's like loosing your car-keys at a baseball game, and getting a toothache at the same time...  It's extremely unlikely that these two situations were unrelated, but golly, how?

If the seat shattered, and fell down INTO the hole, and the piston came UP, it'd easily ram a chunk of debris into the I-valve.  Normally, I'd expect a bent valve, bent pushrod, damaged rocker, etc., and very serious, immediate problem signals.  Yeah, that'd certainly get the attention of the I-valve's cam lobe and lifter, but I would NOT expect it to mow the lobe off quick, without going a whole lot further involved in OTHER components.

What does the intake lifter look like after that?  does it look really traumatized like it stopped rotating, or did it just wear off the ground face?
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

Yeah Wekracer,,,it is a very interesting read,! I also had one of those "mysteries" on a one owner Silverado trk with a 305. The PO bought it brand new and trk ran perfect for many years, then decided to sell it and I drove it around neighborhood and on the hiway before buying. I drove it on my trailer, paid the bill and drove home, patting myself all the way home. Drove it off the trailer at home and decided I would show it off and took a drive around MY neighborhood ,,,,,,,of a sudden, it started missing on one cylinder,,,HMMmmm,,,then missing on two,,,then more,,chit, I thought I was gonna have to push home as it barely got home and engine died just as I drove into work area!! Checked spark plugs, ran compression and 5 cylinders had from 10 to zero compression. Pulled valve covers and engine was very clean but no action from rocker arms on all them cylinders. Talk bout SICK,,,Decided to pull engine and the rest of engine was like new. THEN, I start reading bout them year 305's being real BAD bout eating camshafts,,,? Who knew,,?
Decided to put a 454 I rebuilt in the trk but I made sure it had a pint bottle of Zink from Oreillys before I fired it up....I have always added zink to any rebuild I do.

No bent push rods. No bent valves, at least nothing obvious. Lack of fresh air to keep the combustion chamber under the max designed temps eventually got to the fit of the seat in the head pocket on the #6 cylinder. The mushroom lifter was junk, but not nearly as bad as the lobe on the camshaft. The other lobe in the making of failure was also an intake on #5 cylinder... lifter almost looks useable at this point. New camshaft and 12 lifters and we'll see what happens. Bothers me that there are three other Harvey diesel engines on the farm. I think we start adding zinc to each oil change to prevent another failure like this.
