As soft as the market has been for tractors, he might not get a bid for $15,000????

That is #3, I looked at it at the sale and this is definately it and the serial matches. It has some rather unique features as with any tractor. As I've said before, I may not be able to tell my twins apart at times but every tractor is different.

Well if a guy had $15,000 to spend he could have bought it a year and a half ago for $13,000 right. I'm just saying the market has been soft, though not so much on rare or oddball tractors and this might just be somebodies Dream Tractor who knows? I wonder where #1 is?

After reading the link, I still kick myself for not going for that sale. As I remember, Mr Nutsch passed away a few months after the sale. I guess it's better to still be around to see your collection sell instead of your heirs.
I think I would start the bidding a little lower to get it started, at 15, no one may want to bid. My opinion only. |

Hard to say what it will bring. As a rule tractors 1 and last one built carry a heavy premium but anything else is just another in a long line. For my money I 'd rather have any number of better deals around but who knows?? For a farmer a couple semi loads of corn will provide the cash, travel expences with some left over to buy something to calm down the ole woman and will hardly be missed come time to tally up the farm profits for 2011.

I am sure that the #1 A is in Canada. It was found in Colorado When Larrry Swenson found that herd of A's that mine was in. If I was looking for an A, as nice and straight as that one is, I would consider it. As an owner, though, I hope the value rises. I probably won't own another one. Dave.

David Maddux, do you know where in Colorado the A's were? Hope they weren't next door to me. Not that it matters at this point.

Farming is the most expensive hobby i have,, next to collecting tractors.. oh well,, it keeps me digging in the cold cold ground,,$15,000.00 is half a 220 fwA, they're might be cheap yet.. passed up A's for half close to home last year,, definitely on the list though! positive it will bring more satisfaction than money in the bank....

Although I have been known to take a poke on here now and then I am floored that my comment was taken as a slam on farmers????. To some people $16K aint a lot of money, is to me. So all may know, nobody is happier than I that farming has been profitable that last couple years, around here VERY profitable and they are spending money like they won the lottery, I am happy they can do it. If your operations have not been profitable I feel sorry for you and sorry you took the comment as a slam. Edited by Butch(OH) - 23 Dec 2011 at 6:51am |

Butch, I understand your perspective. I got a new perspective yesterday. $240/ acre for fertilizer and chemicals for next years crop. Add another $100/ acre for seed and the tractor budget gets pretty slim. OTOH. 150 bu/ acre for $5.50 an acre is $825 gross income per acre.

So then, based on $825 gross per acre, deduct $340 in seed and fert.
If you take $485 (This would not include fuel cost and maintenance overhead, or even LABOR).
Multiple that by 50 acres $24,250
Then, figure you just bought that 50 acres @ $5,500 an acre... $275,000
Thats a bare minimum payback of 11.3 years. And thats NOT with interest to the bank.
That 50 acres would be probably paid off in a 30 year or more program.
Don't know about you guys, but 30 years is a long time.

Now figure it at $10,000 per acre (have seen some ground sell for that or more). How will that ever pay off ? Don't make since.

You know it wouldn't cash flow at $2500 an acre, then it wouldn't cash flow at $5500 now it won't cash flow at $10,000 plus yet somebody keeps buying it. I never thought I'd have bought $4500 an acre land, but the circumstances happened that made it work. I wouldn't have belived that it could have doubled in value in 4 years after we bought it. Never thought that I'd briefly consider bidding on 40 acres that I thought might bring $8,000 (call it irrational exuberance, LOL, but it was across the road from my house.) it brought $9700 BTW. I farm, I'd like to have more land but the competition is fierce.
I have several neighbors that are big time operators 2000 to 5000 acres or more. One young man, has no problem buying a $15,000 tractor, he has a nice Massey Ferguson 4WD and an 1155 and a Massey Harris 55 and an 1155 pulling tractor, not to mention the restored cars and many other toys. None of this is used for farming they have late model John Deere stuff tor that. Like Butch was trying to say it depends on the circumstances but there are a lot of farmers that have BIG money to throw around right now. We know that farming is cyclical and we're probably near the top of the cycle. Better hang on to that cash.
