Im hoping somebody can help me out here. I have a 912 Hydro Garden Tractor. The tractor has been going through belts like wildfire. Ive put 6 on it in the last 2 seasons. Ive had it to the shop 3x now and spent over $500 to fix this and its still happening. It is the belt that drives the mower deck from the clutch under the seat. I think everything except for the clutch has been replaced. The clutch seems to work good as i look at it while puting the pto in and out but is it possible that its still the culprit eventhough it seems to be working. I noticed that it was extremely hot when the belt broke yesterday. This thing mows better than any mower ive ever had , but this belt thing is getting old and i dont wanna take it back to the shop again. Thanks

you probably have a bearing gettingHOTan transferring heat to the belt benn in the mower repair 40+ yrs. happens to all of them and use a mower belt not fractional hp. belt like 4l belts you need an A BELT or kelvar

Like what was stated above if one of the spindle bearings is get hot it could be contributing to the belts breaking.
Are you sure they have been putting the rite belt on there? Reason I ask is because on Case GTs if you run a belt that you get from napa or TSC on your mower deck or snowblower it will work for a little bit but after awhile it will start slipping because the actual case belts are slightly narrower then the aftermarket belt. They sit a little deeper in the pulley then the aftermarket belt and allows it to make better contact with the pulley. |

this might be something you already know, but if it's like mine, there are 2 pulleys on the tractor, an inner and outer. one is for attachments, the other is for the mower deck....i have no idea if that would make a difference.....and trying to remember which is right while at the computer instead of standing next to the mower isn't helping....but it's another thing to look at.

First you need a Simplicity belt to handle the bending involved (including a back side idler).
Second, there are 2 tabs to mount the back side idler pulley that is right below the drive pulley and slightly in front of the drive pulley. One tab is for the belt routing to the snow thrower and is aimed pretty much forward. The other tab aims the pulley to the middle of the mower deck. If that flat side idler pulley is on the wrong tab, belts fail. The other rule to remember is to shut off the mower before lifting the deck. |

I have had a 712 and 2 912's and now 2 918's. I have noticed if you lift the deck while it is running or go over very high or low spots, where the deck is at extremes, ( such as mowing a ditch cross wise instead of length wise ) it tends to strech the belt and they don't last very long. I also agree, you need to use genuine Simplicity or AC or Agco belts. The others don't last. The mower belt should be on the inside pulley on the clutch shaft. They are the "BEST" mower made for doing a fine job of mowing.

I also have a 712S, 912H and 918H and you have to use Simplicity belts.

Thanks for the help, i bought a new kevlar a belt today and im going to try it out. Its not a simplicity belt (thats what the last 3 that broke were) so im gonna try this out, and im also gonna try changing the idler pulley to the lower tab as its now on the upper one. Thanks for all the replies and ill let you know how this goes.

Moving the idler pulley should solve your problem (with a good belt).

Pulley alignment is critical as the belt makes 2 sharp bends. Ive had lots of trouble with the PTO belt on the 700s and 900s. I finally went to a B width belt, adjusted the pulleys to align with the larger groove on the clutch and have had real good luck with belts lasting. It will pull a kevlar belt in two, we used to mow cemetaries and had 6 of those mowers at one time, the B width belt fixed the issue. Good luck.

Skip - do you know the specific B-size belt you used? - I have a 716H and I've replaced one belt already in the last year. Mike

Thanks for all the help guys! The new kevlar belt is working great after about 8 hours of mowing so i can conclude that i found the problem. My problem actually ended up being the lower pulley that can slide back and forth was slid way too far front and was making actual contact with the idler. I slid the pulley back, tightened it, turned the idler pulley around so that the messed up area that was making contact is now on the outside , and installed the new kevlar belt........and waaaalaaaa its as good as new. Thanks again!! Im also looking for a tiller, snowblower and snowplow for the 912. I was told that all allis chalmers attatchments will fi\t any allis garden tractor ....is this correct?

No. All attachments will not fit all series. Take a look on http://www.simpletractors.com/ and see what you find there. It's not the easiest site to navigate but there's a lot of good info there.

I dont remember what size it is Mike, 42 and 48 decks take different lenght belts, and I put a 42 in deck drive pulley on the 48 in deck and use the wider pulley on the clutch pulley so it will still turn about as fast as before. The wider B width groove on the clutch pulley is deeper so it doesnt turn the deck as fast, hence the pulley change. HTH

Get a 48" deck. It covers more ground and is easier to get close to stuff as it sticks out a little farther on each side. Just get the right belt.
