Has anyone changed their fixtures from florescent to the LED bulbs that you bypass the ballasts? I googled and lots of bulbs available. Can't get any radio stations in the shop when the lights are on from ballast interference and hoping to get a few projects going this winter and I could use a little more light output anyway.

A friend down the street switched all of his over to LED. He put
in 4' and 8' single tube LED"S, and plugged them into smart outlets. He
can now tell Alexa to turn on either side, the rear, or all of them. It
sure is lots brighter in there and I think he said he paid $19 per.

I switched all of mine. Instant light..no flickering when they are cold! Radio reception is greatly improved; especially AM frequency

I changed one 8' over and it still kept the ballast (the 8ft was 2 , 4' bulbs with a splice) the LED strip is inside a plastic tube and has ends on the bulb of the single post but splice ends and connector has 2 terminals at joint .
Other 4' fixtures i bought are for T8 style small bulbs which I got on sale for $4 for 2 bulbs LED - then picked up some T12 , 4' bulbs LED for $2 each Next i picked up a string light package at Harbor freight that is 24' in length and takes 12 bulbs - paid $19 each for them with coupon. Am going to run 3 strings down bay with LED 100 watt bulbs in sockets as they have a standard socket in the string - Son bought 100 x 100w - LED box of bulbs for a good price and has did his pole building with 2 strings so far says they work great https://www.harborfreight.com/24-ft-12-bulb-outdoor-incandescent-string-lights-black-63483.html Edited by Coke-in-MN - 23 Dec 2020 at 8:15pm |

Well,,,I DO NOT allow that woman anywhere on my property,,!! I know,,I know,,it sounds romantic to tell that woman inside that contraption to do this and do that,,,but she is also highly capable of viewing what is in front of her,,,and transmitting what she hears and sees and all that ,,,,"somewhere else",,,,,,,

I took all but the 8' one out of my barn. The 8' will be next but I have to move a few things before I can get to it. I put the 3 peddle lights screwed into the old barn surface mount sockets. They work great ant were $10 each. In my shop I put up two strings of 4' long Led tube lights have a white steel ceiling its bright as day. Each rude has a connector on both ends just plug the 4" jumped into the light next to it you cane run strings 6 lights long from one outlet. When I built the shop I put 2 outlets in the cieling 10 feet apart near one end so I have 24' long lights in a 36 ft long building.

I used the LED conversion kits to switch my 4' florescent's to LED. A fraction of the price of new LED fixtures and less work than removing old fixtures and installing new fixtures.

I’m looking to do the same, I have 6, 8’, 2-tube, T-8 fixtures. Since they’re 2 tubes per fixture I’m going with the 5000K daylight, if they were single bulb I’d go with the 6000K, I just haven’t made up my mind to go with clear or frosted. Bulbs come in packs of 10, basically a $200 conversion.

I've been swapping out the old FL units(T8) for 4' LEDs a couple at a time. Since the LED ones have plugs , I can add more later if needed.. I put 1by4 strapping up where they 'should' go, then screw the chains in and plug into the 4hole receptacle nearby.

The ones I am looking at, you cut the ballast out, run the hot wire to one end and neutral to the other, the drivers are inside the bulbs. I wouldn’t want the ones that keep the ballasts, the amp draw wouldn’t change and those ballasts will get scarce eventually. |

You can buy a complete new, LED unit for LESS than a T8 electronic ballast, up here 'north of the 49th'..... also 'some' LEDS are NOT dimmable ! Best read the labels if you're replacing 'soffit' area lights.....yeah, I red the label...after.....NOW all ARE dimmable....

i have those string work lights like Coke has, they are 50 ft long, a bulb every 10 ft and a plug on the end to ad more lengths. i hung them from the rafters the length of my big shop, and placed another string around the walls above my work benches. i have new 4 ft LED lights in my cook shack, comes with 2 rows of LEDS and also has a plug in built in to ad more lights. bought them at a farm store for $10. each. they can be spaced any length you want.

DougG, on the conversion that I used, the ballast comes out and the tube holders at one end are switched with ones that come with the kit and the leads from these new holders connect to the 120v power wires. The new conversions are much brighter than the old florescents.

Watch what kind of LED light bulbs you buy if you are converting an old fluorescent type.. You cot out the ballast for the conversion.. Then SOME bulbs you connect your black and white power wires to the two pins ON THE SAME END of the bulb and leave the other end BLANK..... On the other "two end" system. you connect the black wire to BOTH WIRES on one end of the bulb and the white wire to BOTH WIRES on the other end of the bulb. See if you have SINGLE END bulbs TWO END bulbs.
Look at your SOCKET ends also to see if there is a JUMPER between the two pins. SINGLE DOUBLE Edited by steve(ill) - 26 Dec 2020 at 9:14am |

I guess maybe the easiest would be to eliminate the 8 ft fixtures and even if I had to put one light socket at each end of where the fixture was and use led bulbs. That gives me the option if I want more light I could get a couple cob lights or maybe some other fancy LE$D paddle light that screws in. One bit of advice when dad wired the shop he put all 4 8ft florescents on one switch so when you enter the shop you turn on all the lights. Should be better for bulb life if there was a lite over the workbench or by the entry to turn on and add others only as needed.

Built my shop LED was not so prolific, went with 8' fluorescent where if change to LED with end up two four footers for each eight unit. Six two bulb big lamps will be 12 little ones. Will wait until out of Fluorescent replacements, or move.

If you remove the 8' fixture and install a 'double, 2 receptacle' box, you can plug 4 prewired LED fixtures in place of the 8'FL unit. I put 2LEDs up then find the 3rd hole is GREAT for a trouble light....

I have the 8' single pin fixtures already up, out of replacement bulbs so I gotta do something. I have heard that the 8' replacement LED's tend to sag in the middle so it was suggested to take a thin copper wire and wrap around everything for support. I think I'll like em whether they sag or not, anyway. . . . I think I'm going to go with the frosted lens instead of the clear. I already have a couple of LED work lights and they blind you if you accidentally look directly at the light and that's just 2, if they're all over the ceiling it may be kinda hard to avoid.

I got 4 of the 6 fixtures converted today and I don't think I'd do anything different. I bought single row 45w, 6500k, frosted, FA8 bulbs. The FA8's are single pin on each end and I replaced the sockets also. The single pin was important because the fixtures have 2 bulbs each and after I installed them I rotated each bulb so the light was angled outward and not straight down. If I hadn't already had the fixtures I would get the single bulb, 72w, double row, v-shaped lamps. The difference is amazing and a side note, the 8ft bulbs do sag in the center so I used one of the old thin wires from the fixture and tied it around the center to support the bulbs.

I'm wiring mine pole barn with single sockets. Our local IGA store has Maxlite LED 4 pack 100w for $0.98. For 25¢ each bulb, and a couple bucks for the sockets etc. I'm ready for years. They'll last longer than me.
