Sorry for the long post. Trying to do some research and educate myself.
 
I'm trying find  the lowest serial number 8550 still in existence. Hard to say whether this is even possible. Norm's book says, I believe, the first is 1001 (hand stamped on the left side of the top articulating pin on the heavy horizontal plate-owners would already know this, I guess).
 
It also appears that the engine numbers matched-could someone confirm that this is the case. I'm thinking that Allis would have basically received engines from the Harvey site (I think that's where the engines were assembled), taken the serial number from the engine that would presumably be chronolgical and then stamped the frame serial number as 8550- 1 (then the 3 digit engine serial number). The engine serial number is on a riveted plate on the left rear side of engine). Just trying to understand how they did it, whether there was a system to it (likely) and whether this was it. If so, then a tractor would have matching numbers. The ones I've seen appear this way.
 
Anyways, anyone that has one or knows where one is if they were prepared to check the serial numbers, I'd be interested. I have a fairly low number and I'm wondering how many may still be below it. I'd also be interested in knowing which Forum members have them and their thoughts. Especially stuff on how to take care of them and their (the tractors) idiosyncracies. Thanks

Dad has a 78' and and 81'.  If you want some info i may be of help , as we have been running 2 8550's for 10 years or so.  i doubt the 78' is low enough to be the earliest as i believe it is 1500 something but i can check if you really want to know.

I know who has the first and second 8550. Send me an email with your request and I'll forward it to the owner. They want to remain private and I will respect their wishes. They are very busy with many businesses. I have developed a repore with them so may be able to get the info.

I know of no number correlation between the engine serial number and the tractor serial number.  The first tractor SN would have been 1001.

Just curious, have you checked the serial number registry on this sight? And register your tractors if you haven't already.

I think I have #1005,need to check for sure. I was told it came out of North Dakota off some indian reservation, it also has a good sized bullet hole through the grill. I haven't really used it in 8 years. Since the 6120T was a destroked and crankshaft modified 844, 6138 I too doubt that the engine serial number would match the tractor serial number. Allis should have just made the mods. to the drivelines and kept the 6138 as it was. Mike

Increasing the size of the PD and tranny to handle the torque of the 6138 was cost prohibitive (tooling) for the volume of the 8550.  Tooling for a new crank and reciprocating parts was a lot, lot cheaper.
