Just checking to see how many are out there and whether they are still earning their keep. I"ll go first, Dad & I just acquired serial # 1582. It has been repowered with a 282 HP Mack truck engine. The guys that repowered it 25 years ago said it would out work and burn less fuel than the first quad-track they tried to replaced it with. Andy

A buddy of mine has one. He likes it pretty good. I think they had it overhauled about 10 years ago.

We have 2 still working on the farm. Here is my dad pictured with both and the 7580 in the back. We overhauled the left/front one about 10 years ago. both have cast centers and spin outs all the way around and both are less 3pt.

I have one. Not sure of the serial number. Only gets used in the spring to put the crop in. Wish I had year round use for it, But I don't. It has a noble purpose and does it well I guess, so what more can I ask of it. Darrel

I have serial number 1410. Repowered it with a 25000mk2 (844cu) a couple years ago after the original engine burned a piston. Huge difference in power. Hows the MACK engine pull in a tractor? I remember someone around here doing that to a 4586 IH a long time ago.

I have an early 1978 model serial #1085. Bought it in 1989 from Sandhill Equipment in Bassett, Ne. It supposedly originated from an Indian Res. in ND. It has a bullet hole through the front grill surround, don't know the story there also! Ran it hard for ten years. It has the short axles w/Mexican hat wheels and powershift rims. It is also a 3-point delete model. Replaced it with a Steiger PTA 280, 3406 Cat, which I still use today. Mike

Why did it get replaced by a Steiger? My Ford FW30 is Steiger built and I would any day rather run my 7580.
I'm assuming a 8550 is similar to operate to a 7580 just bigger. Edited by victoryallis - 27 Jul 2017 at 9:27pm |

It was replaced for the simple fact that the PTA 280 is just a better machine in every aspect. First is the cab, fully unitized, better HVAC system, similar to the A-C 4W series. The 3406 @ 893ci is just getting warmed up @ 300hp, the 6120T @ 731ci turned pretty hard @ 300 hp and yes mine is calibrated to 4w-305 rpm specs. In my opinion they should have used the 844 engine and would have had a lot more reliable tractor. The 750, 5 spd. Allison auto tranny is rated for 400 hp, mine has 7k hours and has never been apart. The 8550 does have closed center hyds. which is a plus if you want to run hyd. motors. I could list more, but these are just some of the major points. CIH does not support the green steigers anymore, but with places like BTP, Inland Truck,Cat, AP air, I'm able to keep it running like new. Everything on our farm is orange except this Steiger. Mike

We just got this tractor, haven't tried it out yet. It's spent it's life working construction. I remember it sitting at a construction company's yard with no engine in it 25 + years ago. The contractor we got it from are die hard Mack people, they bought it with out the engine and re-powered it with the Mack back in the early 90's. Dad and I spent the day fixing leaks and getting the cab blower fan and switch out. Got new ones ordered. Its not pretty by any means but it is worth saving. Andy
