I have been helping repair an 8550 this past weeks. There were bad gears in the pto dropbox. I wasn't there for the teardown, but it was very time consuming.

Man, I thought taking my 190 apart was a real job. That 8550 is huge! My new motto is: the bigger it is, the harder it is to fix!

With a tractor this big, there is quite a bit of stuff to disconnect and remove just to get at the major parts. I am not sure how many man-hours will be in this repair, but im guessing a lot. We should have it going by the end of the week, we are waiting on an oil pump. The first start in 5 years should be quite a sight!

I thought that dust on the windows looked fairly aged. Good to see another AC kept alive. |

We got her fired up today for the first time in 7 years! Torqing the mains and rods took 2 guys! 400 ft lbs on the mains! We'll get her in the fields later this week as we are already 2 weeks behind on our crops :(

liked how it started puffin smoke out of one ex. then out of the other ... and then both started smoken and finally she started hitting and caught hold and didn't take long to quit that smoke... and the low rumble with the turbo whine... Man that sounded good.

That looks like a long and very big project and I take my hat off to you, but, I want you to do one more thing before you close her up. I want you to pull the valve covers off and run it to check just how much oil is coming out of the rocker arms and down to the valves, adjusting screws, push rods, lifters, and cam. Oil pressure is not oil volume. Our old 4W305 ran @ 65 psi and would not even wet the top of the head after 10 minutes of running in the shop. Pulled the rocker arm shaft and ground a grove from the 4 O'clock hole up to around 3 and 9 to 2 and 10 O'clock. This let the oil out of the shaft and up through the rocker arms.
I know this sounds dumb and no one else on here will agree with me, and I don't care. I have seen it first hand how adjusting screws wear out and push rods turn blue from heat and bend. All caused from a lack of oil volume. When a WC makes more oil volume up top then 4W305, it is a bad day, but a far worse day is coming.

Props for keeping it alive and out of the bonepile!
She sounds pretty nasty! The 516 and the 731 and 844 have a startup that will give you goosebumps, that is for sure. :) |

It was a day to remember around there. The tractor had been sitting in the same spot in the shed for the past 7 years. The owner David was very happy to get it going (he was cranking in the cab) That day was also the 5 year aniv. of his father's death. He is an all allis farm with his daughter and will be getting it in the field this weekend hopefully!
The shirtless guy on the engine was checking for oil on the rockers which did show up within 60 seconds :) We are currently repairing the top pivot articulating ball which has a lot of vertical slop. It has been raining here so we have not been able to plant or work much ground lately, but we will be chisel plowing with it soon. I will get some pictures for sure!
Yes, those turbo(s) sure do sound good! First grey smoke, then black, then it fired up! |
