Neighbor has a power direct 8070, I am not familiar with the pd trans so here is his question. He is wondering the best way to get the tractor moving in road gear without almost killing it on take off. Is there an option of shifting on the fly at all or do you have to start out in road gear and slip the clutch.
Thanks all.

While not the proper way to do it---unless I am pointing downhill on start up I will go from 2nd to 5th on the go, after a bit you get pretty good at it without much if any grinding.  If on a pretty hard surface with not too big of a load then I will sometimes start out in 5th and clutch a couple times to get it rolling.

at lower rpm you can clutch shift with minimal grind. 4-5 seems the most awkward. I don't pull loaded wagons just tillage tools but I start in 3rd and shift up mostly. Some 5th gr starts on solid driveways........just remember not to "hit" the clutch brake unless you can hit  it for the exact amont of time

I have an 8030 pd, I shift it just like my 13 speed in the Frieghtliner, only thing is you need three hands to work the throttle and the gearshift, if you want to steer at the same time .  It is a real nice transmission to shift once you get used to it, so was our 8010 pd when we had it.

No reason you can't shift on the go if you can properly rev-match it, just be gentle but quick so you don't grind the gears but at the same time, you don't want to "grab" or "catch" a gear really harshly.

We lost a lot when we lost the foot accelerator from the 7000 series. You could shift them without the clutch on the roll.

I agree with you on that Dr. Allis. That is the worst thing about the 8000 series,no foot throttle.

Can't a foot throttle be added easily? Of course most everything I do that looks easy ends up three times harder than thought.
