8050 Has been transfering  oil to the trans from rear housing.  I have the lift housing off the tractor because the 3 point cylinder has bad seals.  As the tractor sits the oil level in the trans is at least 3 in higher than rear housing oil level.  I am thinking that it is transfering the oil via the top shaft from the oil spray hitting the shaft and overcoming the seal.  The seals that are bad are the ones in the fitting end of cyl.  Where the oil levels are at now the rear housing is at the bottom of the lip of the pinion shaft and the trans level should be at the top of shaft and does not to appearing to be changing.  Just looking for any ideas or someone that has seen this for ideas to repair this problem.  Thanks.

The top PTO shaft seal should be installed with the spring towards the rear. If that seal is bad your oil transfer problem will be greater when roading the tractor, versus field speeds.

Check oil by the dip stick and sight bulbs. Then let it set and recheck. Oil levels for rear end and transmission are different.       MACK

Seal is facing with the spring towards rear like doc says. I also check the oil levels with the sight glasses and the dipstick like is supposed to be done.  With both levels at proper levels running it for a days time, roughly 8 to 10 hrs,  the trans will be several gallons overfull and the rear the equal amount low. It will get full enough that the trans will get hot and trigger the temp light.  Have proven the trans gets hot with temp gun. this is a power director trans.

We had a customer who would not spend the money for the proper fix of oil transfer from rear to front. Said he was going to put it in a sale.  I ask him to try a fix ... we drilled the side of the  trans housing at the full level, tapped hole for a hose that we connected to the lower sae sight bulb in the rear end. Then ran a small ether tube size line from the intake to the trans and plugged the vent and forced the trans to vent thru the rear end vent via hose (the PFA clutch on 9600's later used this method to force case drain oil back to the rear housing)  which we made sure was open and well vented.  As far as I know it never gave any problems for years til we lost contact with customer.  I am not recommending this, just saying...

As overfull as the tranny is getting, it must be being pumped from the rear to the front, so it must be the steering/gear pump forcing it into the gerotor/tranny pump, which isn't the way it usually goes. What are the odds that the breather to the rear end is plugged, building pressure and forcing oil thru the pinion seal and pump driveshaft seal ?? I guess that could be easily tested by leaving off the rear end fill cap and covering the tube with a sock and rubber band for a day or two to see what the results are.  How is the tractor being used when this happens and is it an FWA ??

Good thought... btw there is an excellent trouble shooting guide on this in the service manual. John Rosendahl and Joe Dewane wrote it.  Doc, did you know those two ?

The tractor is a front assist.  I don't usually road the tractor much,  maybe a few miles a month or so.  Use it on the disc mower,  planter and a small cart in the fall.  I will check to see if the breather is working when I get the rest of the parts to put it back together to repair the 3 pt cyl.   Thanks everyone for the replies.

Yes. Knew them both. That is certainly one of the perks I have had over these many years....meeting a lot of nice people who were good at their job and wanted to help others be good at theirs.

Yes there is a elbow with a vent for the trans and the range box in the front part of the rear main housing.
