2 seasons ago we noticed the inner wheel well on right hand side had gear lube residue all the way around it. We topped off that unit but only took 1 pint to top off. This pre/season it took 3/4 pint to top off. Was reading on AT last night about JD S series final drive fails and the consensus is that a leaky axle seal is due to bearing failure?!! Please tell me this is NOT the case, dad won't put any more $$ into this machine after this season and I am not currently in a position to do it myself. If it is just a seal, how big of a project/undertaking is it? Thanks

It's 38 years old, so the original rubber seals get hard, cracked, & begin to leak. I've re-sealed several gleaner transmissions for same reasons. I found most seals from NAPA by doing a cross reference. Or, your final drive may have a worn axle bearing(s)?

Check the end play in axle, nut may be coming loose. When you put it back to gather, adjust nut then drill through old pin hole to 1/4 and put a 1/4" role pin in place of cotter pin. MACK

yeah,jack it up and see if wheel flops.Mine left a puddle on floor 2yrs ago and it flopped.Figured it was junk. Took it off and apart and shocked to find there is nothing to tighten against for brg play.Like MACK says,cotter pin sheared and nut was backing off.Cleand,adjusted,assembled and all is well.Seal was fine,just leaned on. Didn't do the drill it fix like MACK says. Took 4000 hrs to get there.I won't come close to that in my time.

Thanks for everyone's input!! Hopefully i can salvage inner parts, but I forgot to say our drive tires are 26L's, Previous owner did the rim mods so he could "FLOAT OVER" his soft bottom ground.

That might explain it.Previous owner has widened rt side about 20in and left side out to original edge.Did a pretty slick job! May need to redo that nut thing in my "spare" time. Do you think red loctite would do the same?
