Found a 708C Allis-Chalmers forklift for sale but know nothing about them. 3 hours away and don't want to waste either party's time. What model were they based on? What motor? He says it is a shuttle with gear shift. He said it has a 18,000 capacity. It looks to be much heavier than the D series, I think they were I600's but can't say for sure. My lovely wife seems to have "misplaced" my AC reference books when we moved a year ago and I can't find any info on the net. Looking for something to load pro boxes of seed a little easier this spring.

Perkins powered. Ford drive axle similar to a 5000-7000 tractor. 4-speed torque converter shuttle shift transmission (Borg-Warner I think). An all welded frame structure that shares nothing with farm tractors. Engine and tranny  and rear axle bolt  into this welded frame that is one piece front to back.

D-series was 1981 ? and newer as they had the D-433T engines in them. So, C-series prior to that.

I believe the lift capacity is 8000#.

Leon, what book were you going to look in to find the information about the 708C forklift?  I may have the book if you let me know the name of the book were you thought you could find information about forklifts.  
The book I could pick off the shelf was The Allis Chalmers Story by C. H. Wendel.  I found this information about the 708 series forklifts.   Allis built the 708 in 1980 starting with serial no. 2661, 1981 starting with no.2867, and 1982 starting with no. 3173.
The book has a picture of the 706 forklift made in 1980 and 1981.  The price was $32,000 with a gasoline or diesel engine.  Let me know the book you thought would have information about forklifts and I will know if I have the book.

The 700 series forklifts had the same power train and design as the 715 TLB. The last number designates the lift capacity in 1000's  708 is 8000 lbs.
First series were 236 Perkins power, than AC 433T, finally after CDS took over Cummins 
Borg and Beck transmission - Ford rear end.

Lots of good information above.  The I60 and I-600 forklifts vary from the 700 series forklifts as their design relied upon a semi - integral frame.  Shock and lifting dead loads where transferred to the final drive, torque tube and side frame.  

With the 700 series following the 600 series forklifts the design changed to an integral frame front to back so that the torsional loads developed were transferred along the entire  main frame.   Rugged and Tough Design.  

Check the engine block operators left side, transmission upper right side forward of shift level and mast for serial numbers.  

Some of the AC 700 series units were produced in later years under CDS, and also went on into some of the Ingersoll Rand RT 700 series line.  The later being equipped with Johnny Popper engines.

Walter, I was wanting to look through Norm Swinford. But mine has been "misplaced". I don't have the book you mentioned. 
Guy is asking $8,500, that's just more than I want to spend on something I can get by fine without. But thanks for all the replies and info.

My brother had a 700 series with a Chrysler slant six. Probably a reengine.
