The alternator on my 7060 has stopped charging and the local repair shop said it's cheaper to use a Delco 10SI versus having the Niehoff repaired.
I installed the Delco Alternator and the tractor is charging, but the Tachometer is not working. It seems like if you rev up the motor, the Tach will sometime bounce but it never really registers engine RPM. On the original Alternator, which of the 2 smaller wires was for the Tachometer? I swapped the Niehoff pulley onto the Delco, could that be part of the problem? Is there a way to check if the Tachometer is also Bad? Thanks, |

how did you get the pulley off the neihoff to fit the delco? the ones I been around, the delco shaft is larger, so the neihoff pulley will not fit...
there is gold in them neihoff,,, just go price a rebuild,,,(if ya can find someone that has parts) or price a new one. Wilson electric has some,, a little bit less $$$,, but its still a lot for an alternator... shoup sell a alternator with the adapter plug for tach and new pulley for like $175, you need the 3rd plug for the tach....I think its the brown wire,, but I'm not positive..

The local starter/Alternator repair shop changed the pulley from the Niehoff to the Delco Alternator. The Alternator came with the 3rd plug for the Tachometer.
The total cost for the Delco Alternator with new plug was $ 147.00. The repair shop quoted me $ 1,100.00 for a replacement and an out of my area Allis Chalmers dealer quoted me $ 1,800.00 for a Niehoff. I only paid $ 5,000.00 for the tractor, so $ 1,100.00 to $ 1,800.00 seems like a lot of money to me. I may have it wired wrong and I will check on that this weekend. The wiring harness has 3 wires- White wire is the largest and the power source, a brown wire that was next to the engine and a green wire that was the farthest away from the engine. |

This may not help but that sure seems like a lot of money for an alternator. Do they not make a direct replacement anymore? I feel for you guys my little B generator rebuilds cost me under a hundred. M J auto electric in Milwaukee, WI does good work reasonably and quickly so little downtime. See alot of tractor starters and generators on shelf for pick up whenever I go in. Maybe they work thru mail. 414-462-8911 is phone number, can't hurt to try them. Or how about the guy in NJ does he rebuild these? I think he is on here.

Yes there must be gold in the Neihoff. I had one quit on my 8030. Very similiar prices. Local starter/alternator rebuild store got me a high output delco. For the 3 wire plug. On the front 2 terminals looking from the back of alternator to front, the left front terminal will go to your dummy light. Right front terminal, I usually hook that right to the stud terminal on the back of the alternator with the other wire. 3rd terminal towards the back of your alternator is your tack terminal Key on engine off, both front terminals will have power to them. The way it works is power goes thru your bulb and grounds out thru the Alt. Once running, it loses the ground and light goes out. Seen a few times where the bulb burned out causing the problem of not charging. Also they had to get me a different pulley as Delco and Neihoff has a different shaft size.

The guy in NJ doesn't even entertain rebuilding a Niehoff anymore. Oh wait, that's me. The parts for those units are insane. I've moved a few customer's over to a Delco also Sounds like you have the wrong signal wire hooked up for the Tach... Steve@B&B

After checking the wiring harness, I did have the Tach wired wrong. I corrected the wiring mistake, the tractor is charging and the Tachometer is working again.
I ran across someone that has a brand new in the box Niehoff Alternator, but he's not sure what he wants for it. My old Alternator was 100 Amps and his Alternator is 80 Amps. I don't think a 20 Amp difference will be noticeable for what I use the tractor for. The man is retired and will never have a use for it, what would be a fair offer? |

I have a 8030 with a bad niehoff alternator. Saw your post wondered if you could tell me the number off your delco? Also how you hooked it up so everything worked.
