    Posted: 07 Jul 2022 at 5:15pm
Got a 1975 7050 that was working the other day in 4th gear, High on floor, Low on side lever when it stopped abruptly making a mild rumble.  Looked it over, PTO in rear worked, Steering worked, 3pts worked, and remotes worked. When you pushed the button on the floor the clutch would pop it out. Everything worked but movement and when you tried to make it move the engine would pull down hard and did the same in all gears and high or low on both buttons and side lever. We split the tractor and pulled out the power director. We jacked up a rear wheel  and attempted to turn with a bar but could not budge it, when the transmission was put in neutral it turns freely. We pulled the main shaft out and it came out easy, splines were good on both ends of the shaft as well as where they inserted.  Before doing any more disassembly, I would like to know if the PD High and Low Range Hollow Shafts should turn, either one or both?  Neither have any movement no matter what you do and I am a little suspicious? I have not done anything to the PD but with it out I was making sure there wasn't an issue behind it and not being able to turn anything in gear with a bar on a wheel makes me think that is likely where its at. Does anyone know if either hollow shafts should move? Any thoughts or suggestions on what to do next would be appreciated, Thanks

What did you see in the filters and the magnetic drain plugs?

What did you see in the trans oil when you drained it? (not the rear diff)

If there was nothing chunky in the trans oil drain, I would lean to the power director.

We need more info.

With the 5 speed transmission in neutral, both hollow shafts should turn together BUT at different speeds.

If neither hallow shaft turnes, 5 speed and range may be in gear. They should turn free in nutural.                                    MACK

I am confused, you said it stopped and would not move - did it choke the engine down ? You say 'when I try to MAKE it move it chokes down' .  early 7030 7050's had an issue gaulding /seizing the 3d/4th gears to the shaft. IF everything works and the unit will not move the female splines in the PD hub have rounded out. The symptoms you describe we have encountered but the ones that siezed the shafts would not roll in gear as it is in 2 gears at once.  IF your tractor stalled and the engine kept running not lugging down indicates 2 issues..

Yes, it choked down the engine, I am pretty sure it would have killed it if allowed but I saw no reason to do that. As for the plug and and filter, I am going to try to attach a picture of the magnetic plug, it had very little on it, about the same on the filter, no big chunks, no bearing parts, just what you see when you change oil in a car.

We have ran 7060 and 7050s for years, I too assumed it was a shaft problem as we have been down that road, the splines look great and the fact the hollow shafts are locked solid leads me to believe the problem is on that end. I am running out of things to look at, with the top off the transmission, you can manually change the gears fine, no issues or obvious problems? Thanks

I am still working on it, the only thing I can see is the two hollow shafts do not turn and the very slight amount they will rock back and fourth, they both move together, it not a lot, just like slop from wear. What could lock the two up? Thanks

OK, something new, while there wasn't anything on the magnet, filter or fluid, with a magnet on a stick I did find a chunk of wire at the very back of the transmission case.  I don't know why it didn't catch on the magnet but I later discovered one of the safety wires were missing from the rear fork of the shifter so that has to be the wire I found?  I am not sure if that is the source of the lock up, as old as it is I would assume it would have enough play to eat a piece of safety wire but the rest of the wire has not been found. What do you guys think?

With the 5-speed trans in neutral, you should be able to grab onto either of the top hollow shafts and turn them. Use one of the hubs out of the P.D. clutch to help, but they should rotate the same way, just one 20% faster or slower than the other one.

with the 5 speed in neutral, using the hub, I can rock it maybe 1/16 back and fourth, it makes a very abrupt stop either way. When you put the transmission in gear, it takes maybe half that movement out. Something has it locked solid. When I put the transmission in gear with a wheel jacked up and use a 6ft bar to turn the tire I do no better. I am running out of ideas?

What if you pull the floor of the cab and then pull the top of the transmission.

Then you can have a good look at the the gears. - galling on shaft or chipped teeth, etc.

You should be able to move them (shift) by hand back and forth.

Or get a camera scope to look in from the bottom, although its not as good.

Yes, I have done all that. not much wear, everything looks good and moves freely by hand. The two hollow shafts being stuck seems to be the problem but I can't figure out where they are stuck, thanks

That hollow shaft stuff has always me think- what grade metal was in that shaft to be strong enough to keep it all together? I do understand that just a little bearing faiure would wipe it all out l

More often than not they weld themselves together and then the small one twists off, making it easier to take apart.

I think you are right about the hollow shafts being welded together, although I do not see any discoloration from heat.  It appears from the big parts book you got to remove the entire transmission to get those things out? Maybe I am missing something but that is how I read it? Thanks

Had tranny out of my 8070 PD. Was not that bad to do. Replaced all brgs . Big brg behind PD was out and lots of metal ran through all. Hindsight says probably didn't need to do that as brgs didn't seem much effected once apart. Just trying to save down time in the future.

Yes, if you are working on the transmission, you need to pull it out.

I have pulled mine out with no previous experience and changed two gears that were chipped.

A transmission stand on wheels is necessary. Then you can roll it to the side and pull it completely apart.

Once the tranny is out, remove the trans brake at the rear lower shaft and pop out the snap ring for the cup. Remove the large nut on the front lower shaft and drive the shaft rearward until all the gears fall down inside the trans. Then, you should be able to remove both hollow shafts as one piece.

Thanks everyone, I got the two hollow shafts out, I had marked them with a paint pencil and I can slightly rotate them so I am going to try to get them apart.  I have called all over and the Allis Chalmers people left say they are obsolete and  salvage ones are pretty rare too.  Is there any way I can put the thing back together with only the low range? I am a very small farmer and its not going to be used much so if I could just get it to work I would be happy. Any thoughts? Thanks

I'm confused. If you got them out, polish/machine/grind the area where they welded themselves together and reassemble it.

I got them out as a unit, I was able to slightly turn them separately with huge force while still in transmission but when I got them out they are still stuck together. I have spent the last 2 hours trying to get the inside and outside hollow shafts apart. I carefully blocked it in a press and gave it pretty good pressure and was amazed it didn't separate. Here is a picture looking inside with the cage  bearing out where the gauling is. Any ideas how to get them apart? Thanks

The hollow shafts to a 7030/7050 AND the counter shaft gears that mate with them are unique to a 7030/7050. So, used parts have to come from another 7030/7050 OR use 7010 thru 7580 hollow shafts with their mating counter shaft gears. The tooth count is different between 30/50 and the newer tractors, so as long as you replace things in sets, you are good. So, as far as your seized hollow shafts go, a 50 ton press would maybe get it done and then maybe 100 tons ?? Of course you have to not damage things doing it. But, I'm not kidding...polish/grind/machine on a lathe, whatever it takes to smooth things up AND create some distance will work. Replace the ball bearing for sure and probably the two tapered bearings and cups.

I got it apart unharmed, Dr was right, it took a full 80 ton press and I wasn't sure that would be enough.  Here is what it looks like apart, will try to do some lathe work on it tomorrow and then see how much stuff I got to order to put it all back together. I really appreciate all the help on here, I would have gutted it like a fish before I figured it out without this forum.

Glad you got it to cooperate !!   To answer Allis Freak's question: The beginning of the 7000 series was the 7030 and 7050. They were originally supposed to have a custom version of an Allison power shift transmission, but that didn't happen, so A-C designed their own. In the meantime, the Power Director transmission was conceived and unfortunately it only had about 15 speeds out of 20 possible selections. Some engineer must have had a bad battery on his calculator. So, when the second generation 7000 series came out (7040-60-80) they corrected that mistake and had 19 speeds out of 20 choices. That's why these input gears are unique to the 30-50 models.
