 Topic: 7045 shifting idea

I hate the T handle shift on my 7045 I want to go to standard gearshift beween my legs like my 7040 ?!! Can I just take that lever off top of transmission and put a gearshift in that housing or do I need an different transmission cover ?? anybody try this ?? TIA John

Sorry to hear your dislike. Is yours hard to shift in to gear or you just don't like the setup? I purchased my 7045 last year and after I got use to it I like it. I just rotate my wrist instead of moving my whole arm. Mine slides in to gear very easy.

I just need to spend more time adjusting I guess ? Once you use a direct gearshift, I dont think you would want to go back ? Are all 70 45 set up like that ?

All black bellys use the T-handle shifter unless it's a powershift, well maybe a 7000 doesn't, I've never been on a black belly 7000.

I kind of suspect some of them were not set up to their optimum capability from the factory or dealer and some guys just used them and did not know or care how well they could work. Adjusting them takes some time and patience.
Over time and use it seems to me the cables wear inside and don't move the levers all the way as they did when new. I put both cables and some cable ends on mine and then some adjusting and it is pretty nice. It is a model year 1981 and I did the work in 2011, had about 4500 hours on it. Probably depends on how you use the tractor and how many and what shifts you make.
The cable on the lever to the valve that I use for the tailgate on my baler seems to be worn on the inside and I really don't get the stroke on the valve to repeat the same way every time. That kind of wear sneaks up on you letting you keep on using it rather than a complete breakdown.
I fixed mine and am happy with it, probably will cost less and be done sooner that the whole swap out deal. Best of luck what ever you decide.rw

On my 7080 the T handle was a bear to use. I was trying to fix other things and thought that could wait. Well I couldn't stand it anymore and took the console apart. It was full of trash, grass, corn, and whatever else the critters had been living in there. I hit it with the pressure washer and cleaned it out, foam and all. Took apart the handle and cleaned the shaft inside so it rotates smooth. Replaced the 1 cable, it has a series of heim joints or ball type joints for the other movement, just 1 cable. This thing works SOOO nice now, 2 fingers and you can put it into gear. Now I would rather have that than the shifter on the floor. Just what I ran into.

There is one other thing. When I put the new cable in, it goes through a slot in the floor. I had to elongate that slot by about a 1/2" so the cable didn't rub as you move the shifter front and back. That helped loosen it up also.
