I have a 7040 w/Power Director that grinds gears when shifting (at a dead stop). Is there any adjustment for the trans brake? I use this tractor for mowing so the clutch sees quite a bit of use.

Procedure in manual for Djusting clutch pedal. Follow precisely. Should have clutch brake stopping rotation when right.

On the lower left side of the dash, there is a panel. Inside of that panel, is part of the clutch linkage, there are two brass bushings that wear out, be sure and check those as well. On our 7040, replacing these bushings, adjusting the cable, (maybe needs a new clutch cable) you won't believe how much better it shifts. Go to part line 150, the bushings are parts 16 & 17.

Left side. Same side as the clutch pedal.

You have 2 options. Pay a service call for tech to fix or buy a service manual and do it your self.

The short story is there cannot be any "free-play" in the clutch pedal with the engine off. I guarantee there is free-play and the reason is the two brass bushings on the power director valve fork are broken and need to be replaced with new and replace the ball socket and bolt (gr 8) on the end of the cable and then adjust the clutch cable to zero free-play. Spray WD40 all over that fork area to lube things up. Everything is located straight in from the open cab door when you remove the maroon panel ahead/under the clutch pedal. This used to take me less than an hour to do if that's all I was doing.
