7040 pto lever problem

   Hey guys thanks for the add to the site. Have done a lot of reading on here. I have just purchased my first tractor on my own. It is a 7040 Allis I purchased the tractor with bad engine done a lot of diag and testing to find out to be injector needed rebuilt. I have got everything going and been driving it around. Hooked to my first price of equipment and engaged the pto and everything starts fine with no problem but as soon as I take my hand off of the pto lever in goes directly back into disengage and everything stop. The lever will not stay engaged. I have checked the cable and everything is moving properly that I can tell anyways. My tractor smarts are not the best. Any help would be highly appreciated thanks in advance.

	Plumb a 5000 PSI gauge into the valve that the pto cable actuates and see what the pressure is. I don't remember exactly what it's supposed to be, like 400-ish I think? I had a very similar problem on my 7045, only mine was more of an intermittent drop out. Holding it forward with a bungee cord won't hurt a thing.

	Thanks Tbone for the response. Did you ever get yours fixed or is the bungee cord trick still working. It is getting close to time for me to start using the tractor a lot. So I might have to do that until I can figure out the problem.

	it takes hydraulic pressure to hold the lever in detent - could be symptom of other issue.

	Greer, when I checked mine out, the pressure was good, so I was puzzled. I'm 99% sure my issue is fixed......with? A fuel filter! Yes, I believe so, don't laugh. As I said, mine was more of an intermittent drop out, under load while chopping sorghum. I wasn't operating the tractor, dad was, and I was trying to make sense of what he was telling me, which isn't all that easy to do sometimes (He's 79, and I love him dearly, but...) Anyway, once he started complaining about power, I knew something was up. That tractor should have been able to twist that 782 NH chopper in half. So I went to the field, listened, observed, and I could tell it needed fuel. Replaced the filter. My reasoning was that when it would bog down, hydraulic pressures would decrease and the clutch would drop out. tbran is right, it could be a symptom of something else. If you have good pressure, the bungee cord trick won't hurt anything. If you don't have good pressure, the bungee cord won't really help anything. So checking the pressure is the place to start.
