 Topic: 7020 Cab vs IH 86 series

How would you guys compare the Allis cabs to an 86 series? There is a 7020 come up for sale close that looks decent and we have a 986 now for small jobs but the gear noise from the Ih is about drove me nuts.

Ive driven both. The gearshifts on the left on the 86 series drove me nuts. The 7020 wont have the ih gear whine
The steering wheel on the 7020 tilts and telescopes. Id take the AC every day of the week

I would agree, the Allis 7000 series cab was much nicer than the 86 series cab. You won't have two doors, but you will have one much more usable door.

Plus the door opens the correct way. It took Case to tell the IH engineers the correct way the door should open and fixed that on the magnums.

Makes me laugh !! The "86" series was the same old girl in a new dress, and it wasn't even a nice dress, but the best they could come up with. By this time Deere and Company had overtaken them in tractor sales and the same old 706/806 chassis wasn't cuttin it anymore.

I appreciate all the replies ,suppose to be going saturday morning to have a look. Doc I know exactly what you mean, I have wrecked several IH and have a lot of parts.I know them fairly well and work on quite a few of them but it doesn't mean I think they're the best either. We have several different colors here but the last Allis was our WD that left years ago but do have my cousins 170 and 180 here that I look after for him.

No piece of equipment is perfect, but whoever thought putting the starter where they did on the 86 series was good idea......

One thing they did have easy to work on was the dual-speed PTO. A good thing too, because they weren't that tough of a PTO clutch compared to a 7000-8000 A-C.

Can you guys school me a bit on the 7020 ? He says its a PD transmission just wondering the location of dipstick or sight glass?? for the back half.

Dipstick in the cab floor for transmission. Sight glasses at the rear of tractor for rear end-hydraulic oil.

I feel you like the bigger 7000 series with 426 engine much better.

7020 has the turbocharged, inter-cooled, 301.

7020's with no fluid or extra weights weigh in at about 12,000 lbs, which is usually enough for a 120 PTO HP tractor.

I think it will be fine for all it has to do. It will only be pulling a 6 row planter my bean planter ,disc bine and small square baler a little bit. No tillage at all ,it will have an easy life.

You will get along just fine, you will like the tractor. We couple of 7020 powershifts on feed wagons, ran well.

Reason being for the Air filter is that with the 06-56 series they had a removable door to service the air filter on the side of the hood and IH was getting a lot warranty claims for dusted engines because they concluded that farmers where over servicing the air filter and damaging it, so they put a filter indicator gauge and made it a pain to service so farmers wouldn’t be as prone to cleaning it every day lol

Have a 986, and 2 1486’s. My opinion the cabs are way better. Had a 7045 on the farm but when I started I bought the 1486 over the 7045. Better speed selection, better visibility from the cab, burns less fuel and cheaper to work on with more parts available. Red ones start in the cold weather without either and without being plugged in, usually. Shift levers never bothered me like it does some people. I don’t like the giant cab posts 6” from my ears on the 7045, and you can’t see anything around them.
However, I do regret not buying the 7045 as it was a very nice tractor. And if the opportunity is there to get another nice 7000 series I wouldn’t hesitate, they still are a nice tractor.
