    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 at 11:31am
Fired up the 7000 to do some disking and noticed the alternator light comes on when i use the lights, its not charging. Tach also quit.

Do the aftermarket alternators work with the tach? I see some on amazon and other places under $100 but if it doesnt work the tach i dont want it.

Whats a good alternator to buy? Thanks

I bought a new alternator from CarQuest for my 7010. Made sure it was like the original with 3 prongs on side to run tach. And everything else.   I paid $140 I believe. Switch pulleys from old to new. When I get home I would be more than happy to give you part #.

Pretty sure you just tell them what you are working on, and get number off your bad alternator they should be able to help you out. That's if the parts person isn't lazy. I had to order mine, was in the next day. Not sure if one from a different application will work. Good luck.

Great. Happy to help. We call Napa around here the tomorrow store, because whenever you call to get something they say they can have it tomorrow. I've had an account with CarQuest for probably 18 years. They are great people to deal with, and very knowledgeable.

$140 seems like a bunch of money. Check around and see if you have any local alternator rebuilders.

The independent rebuilders around me all went out of business and the more professional type shops were pretty high. I talked to several shops around me and their estimate for a rebuild was about $100 plus travel or shipping. Ive used these on several tractors and combines and never had a problem so far. You will need your pulley or the tach wont read right, but cheaper than a rebuild for me.

Those independent rebuilders are sadly a dying breed.  When you found a good one, hang on cuz they could be awesome.

One time when I had recently moved to an area, the alternator acted up on my T-Bird.  I asked around, they said I needed to take it to "Sam".  So I take it to Sam.  Old white shed no bigger than a 3 car garage, couple of naked light bulbs swinging from the ceiling, rat trail from the door to the counter through the piles of "stuff".  My kind of place!  Sam was pretty old, didn't seem overly friendly....but I had hair down past my shoulder blades at the time, maybe that had something to do with it, IDK.  Asked what I had going on.  "Well, let's find out", he says.  He puts it on his test bench.  Leads all duct taped together, duct taped to the clamps, dirty as you could imagine.  Spin, wiggle, spin wiggle wiggle, spin....."Yep.  It's bad.  You can pick it up tomorrow."  What, it needs brushes or what?  "Brushes, bushings, cleaning, whatever, pick it up tomorrow."

I go the next day.  "Can I help ya?"  Uh, yeah, I dropped that alternator for a Thunderbird off yesterday....?  "OH!  Yeah.  Wow, well you need brushes alright.  And the front bearing was seized into the housing.  I had to grind the housing in half just to get it apart so I could get into it.  But I had another housing for it.  So it's good now."  As he was saying all the crap he found wrong with it and how hard he worked on it, all I could think was GREAT!  Should have just gone to the parts store and got a reman.  So I hesitate, uh, how much do I owe you?  "$14!"

Hahahaha!!!
