What would you choose? Thinking about getting something a little bigger than the 175D for some of the brushhogging jobs I do...worked the crap out of the 175 today on 8' tall swamp grass.....maybe a stripped down 190XT would be better?? Tractor and mower need to stay under 10k in weight for hauling.....

Instead of a different tractor, I'd goto a different mower. A flail would mulch that swamp grass fast, and you could use a wider mower, finish faster Tractordata shows the 175D at 62 HP, same as my FOrd. Have no problem with a 9 foot flail on my Ford Edited by singingpig - 02 Aug 2011 at 12:11am

6080, you would have more power, and probably be better on fuel.  Nothing wrong with a 185 though either.  I have a 180  at 80 hp and love it, its very good on fuel also.

| you could get into a 185 cheaper than a 6080, although a 6080 has more gears and independent PTO. | |

I think the 6080 weighs less than the 185.  The turbo 4 cylinder has excellent fuel economy (and power - mine dynos over 100).  You also get live PTO, fully synchronized transmission and a faster road gear than the 185.  One thing you might need is front weights.

I have a 185 and it's been great.Have a 6060 and it's also been great.I had 2 185's and sold one for $4350.Down in Tx there hard to sell. They ask 3 to 4 thousand $'s more for the 6080's but they are newer and nicer...synchronized trans. and user friendly PTO's.

Besides a lower price, the 185 gives you the power director and its wet clutch.  That can be quite useful at times.

I vote for the 185 ;  I have both and will take the 185 any day - the 6080 has more speeds but the gear speed between intermediate  and hi is terrible ; you have to keep the engine above 1800 rpm,s to get anything out of it , its helpless as a loader tractor - will spin out in grass and thats with an AC loader with a 4 ft bucket and loaded 18.4-34 in. rubber and wheel weights; they are not balanced at all , spins out  easily with 2 ton of feed in a grinder mixer  ; I just dont like it at all ; now the 185 is great , the powerdirector is so smooth , its easy to change transmission gears with the PD in neutral without grinding , the 301 engine will run great at any rpm  , with power and not just smoke ,put 34,s or 38,s on it and you have fast road gear , the hyd. pto is great !!!  IMO the 185 is twice the tractor over a 6080, but thats me

We have both, the 185 with the 301 starts very easy and has more torque.  It isn't the best mower tractor cause when you want to stop you either have to disengage the pto or put the PD in neutral.  As for the 6080, a brand new tractor would be no better on a mower, GREAT fuel economy, live pto, shift on the fly, turn on a dime.  Both have good road gears - our 185 & 6080 both have 18.4X34's and the 185 goes 1 -2 mph faster.  Both very good tractors, good luck Eldon!

I think you may be exagerrating a bit on the 6080, 185's are an awesome tractor but the 6080's are good also. They are two different animals though. I've ran both and IMO the 6080 is a more user friendly tractor. Not better, just more user friendly. I dont agree with the comment about the 6080 being a bad loader tractor at all.

I like my 185 except for the speed selection is limited. Either way too slow or a little too fast. Best I remember 1st high range is 2.6 mph, 2nd low range jumps to 4.1 mph (per shift pattern chart on tractor). Nothing in between in the 3 mph range, which seems to be what I need in most situations bushhogging especially in unknown territory. JMHO Eric in TN

disc mower would be another option. three point and pull behind models are available and the smaller ones don't require much power--your 170 would pull a small one. Don't get one with conditioner, then the power requirements come up and you may as well make hay.  We have a discbine (with conditioner) for our haying and it will take 5 or 6 foot tall grass without complaint and it can cut through small trees and shrubs if you need to or don't maneuver out of the way just right... karl f

I'd give the one-ninety XT a whirl. I just came in from baling with mine, and I love it. I know you wouldn't have any shortage of power, and fuel economy is awesome. I'm pretty sure that you are pretty handy with the PD, so lack of true live PTO shouldn't be an issue, either. Darrel

back the end of june i pulled a 10" woods in thick crep hevily infested withand 8' johnson grass with my 6060, and it handled the job easily, it would pull it in 2nd high but the ground was a little rough so i used it in 1st high, never gave a problem
