The plug in makes an L shape. Top of the L (closest to big orange wire)light green black stripe. Next wire down would be light green. The one closest to pulley would be brown. Brown wire goes to the tach.hope this helps.

Pictures are always good.  This was on the 6080 when I bought it.  Tach works great.

The tach that runs off a single wire from the alternator is using the alternating frequency inherent in the alternator. That makes the tach calibration dependent on the number of poles in the alternator stator (and there is no industry standard for that count) and the pulley size giving a ratio from the engine crankshaft. Alternators generally spin faster than the engine, that's what makes them charge well at engine idle speed.

For the tach to work properly the alternator needs to be the factory original, any universal replacement is unlikely to have the same parameters as the factory original, but its not absolute that some universal replacement won't work correctly.

I just measured the one in the picture and it is a 3 1/4 pulley.  Tach is pretty accurate with that.  I checked it with a photo tach.
