Topic: $60 Oil Filter?Posted: 04 Nov 2025 at 7:55am |

So I stopped by our local NAPA dealer for an oil filter for our little SAME mowing tractor, with a fairly common Mitsubishi 4 cyl diesel. $60!!. I went to another auto store, and they quoted $57, but none were in stock. I change the oil twice a year on the tractor with few hours, so I figure leaving the old oil filter on for another season with fresh oil won't do any harm. This is just a common Wix or Fram part number - nothing special. Anybody else running into weird prices like this for common items?

with a fairly common Mitsubishi 4 cyl diesel.
i see some sites that list the $60. filter... and others that show a $20. for the same engine ( different filter number) , possibly in a different application... wonder WHY ??? Maybe look at a cross reference charge ? Different access on YOUR engine ??

Service at my local NAPA store kind of come and goes as ownership seems to change every few years.
The good part is that I got an account a way long time ago, and they and Farm Bureau had joint promotion. It seems year later if charge it to the account there is a very good discount on most items. NAPA also has special sales on filters once or even twice a year. But they may not advertise them very much, you need to find more than the average counter jockey and find out when. Then make your list of filters and be ready when it happens.

Fuel filters and oil filters for all the big engines are now $150 to $250 each. Oil is $150 per pail and most need 2 pails (40 litres). So about $500 just for supplies if you want to do it yourself. Crazy times. 20 yrs ago I could do it for $100 or a bit less in supplies for Cummins N14. Or the IH dealer would do same for $125. I started going to the dealership as it was not worth the effort to do myself and then dispose of oil!! 😀😀

I always have, and always will, take the notion that "a good filter is cheaper then a new engine". Whether it be engine oil or air filter. Yeah, sometimes it stings, but I'll take the lesser sting every time.

I find that this is just another story about NAPA's exorbitant prices.
A few months ago, I stopped at our local NAPA, more to see an old friend that works there than to get parts, but I thought I would pickup an oil filter for my truck (Ford diesel). He told me the NAPA Gold filter was around $60. I told him no thanks. I went down the road to the Ford dealer and bought a new (original equipment) oil filter for $24. I used to do a lot of business with our local NAPA, but I rarely go there now. A local auto parts store (not NAPA) gets my business now.

I hear you on Napa's high prices. I avoid them as much as possible now days. Just got a new Auto Zone in town, haven't even checked it out yet.

I have had good luck on RockAuto (about any brand) or Zoro (usually pretty good prices on Baldwin).

I used to drive out of my way to shop Napa. They've gotten too expensive and the counter help has no clue, like everywhere else these days. I buy wix filters at O'Reilly's and most everything else at wmart.

I went to a Massey Ferguson dealership and got two different oil filters for two different MF tractors (MF 275 and MF 4243) and they were $25 apiece. I thought they were high.

I buy quite a lot of stuff from ZORO (which is a Grainger subsidiary). Once you buy from them, they email you some really good discounts. Yesterday's discount was $25 off a $100 purchase. Shipping is always free on any order over $100. The quality of their merchandise is pretty good.

I have been getting filters from Fleet Filter for a couple years now, discounts increase based on how much you spend. I usually end up with the discount being about equal to shipping cost. I usually buy Wix, but I think they also offer Baldwin.
O'Reilly used to do a spring filter sale on Wix, I think they still do it, but I haven't seen it advertised lately. At work we use Fleetguard, get them through Cummins. It is government, so there is a discount that isn't offered to anyone else. When we first started getting them they were about a quarter the cost of any other filter. I haven't been involved in price comparisons for a couple years, but I would assume it is still about the same discount. Ted |
