Will the coulters off a 53 plow fit a 63 plow? My 63 has the concave coulters and I would like to replace them with the straight regular coulters. Thanks

Yes, coulters like plow bottoms fit all plow frames. The are not in the plow frames parts book but are in then plow bottoms book. And there are few variations on coulters. Even the 2000 monoframe plow has the rectangular bars for the clamps made to fit the 50,60,70, etc plow frame.

Ok so I can take the coulters and clamps off a 53 plow and they will bolt right up for a 63 right? thanks for the info. Are the concave coulters very rare?

They will bolt up to any 50, 60, 70, 80, 9000, or 2000 plow, I believe. Some coulter disks might be different sizes for different size bottoms. You want the flat coulter about a 1/4 inch to the left of the landside or shin edge and the bottom about a half inch above the plow point. They are very adjustable, the clamp slides on the plow frame, and the round shank takes care of up and down while the offset in the shank takes care of left and right. They can be a pain to adjust because with the clamp bolts loose all motions are possible and gravity will try to take control.

I believe that a 53 plow has the front coulter mounted to the pull bar, while the 60 series coulters were frame-mounted. I have seen a few variations in coulter shanks and mounts. Some of the coulters mount with the shanks vertical, while others are on an angle. You should check carefully, these may or may not interchange. I used to think that the concave coulters were rare, but I seem to see them frequently now. May have something to do with preferences in different parts of the country.

They were supposed to be better in trash. I just got this 63. I have a 53 that I plow with now and another 53 for parts that I am going to rob the coulters off of and try. Thanks for the info. |

Maybe I lump too many together. My plow bottoms book does show several. I'm sure there was a catalog number for each assembly but this book doesn't show those.
First one is for a "B" pick-up plow Eff 1939, discontinued 1941. It uses two u bolts to clamp the round bar to a plate and to some part of the plow with straps beyond the plate. Its not clear whether that flat bar of the plow is horizontal or vertical or angled. Next there's "B" and "C" pick-up plow effective 1941 where the clamp block is a casting and bolts appear to go through a horizontal plow frame. These first two used a 15" smooth or 16" notched blade. The shank on this one is U shaped, all the rest of the round shanks are offset. Then there's a coulter for a "WD" pick-up plow. Its taller than the previous ones but mounted the same as the second one and the blades are available in 16 or 18" plain or notched. The next one is for a No 1 & 2 series plow and a no.2 series hydraulic controlled plow. Its taller again and the blade yoke looks cast or forged, not bent from flat steel stock. The mounting bolts still go through a horizontal bar of the plow and disks are 16 or 18" plain or notched. Coulter for No 4 series plow effective 1941 has a bent sheet stock yoke, the same through the plow frame mounting bolts for the clamp and blades offered are 15 and 18" plain, 16 and 18" notched. Coulter for CA-54 series two way plow has sheet stock sides to the yoke welded to a casting. Much more slant to the yoke, short shank. 16" plain or notched blades offered. No shank mounting clamp included. Shanks come in 3 or 4" offset. Coulter for a WD-54 and no 60 series two way plow uses all the same parts as the CD-54 except the shank is different and blades are offered 16 and 18" plain and notched. Coulter 50 series 2 and 3 bottom mounted plows 10", 12", 14", and 16" for B, CA, D & WD series tractors has about 45 degree bends for the offset shank, not 90 degree bends. No clamp to the plow frame included, blades 16 and 18" notched or plain. Nearly horizontal yoke separate from the yoke clamp, looks like a welded assembly. So far all have had plain sleeve bearings, long and thin (on a 1/2" bolt). Now we come to a Concave Coulter. No 50, 60, 70 & 80 series 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 bottom Mtd and wheel type plows. There is an extension bar for the mounting, bades are 16" smooth or 18" notched, the coulter spindle runs in tapered roller bearings and there are two different mounting bars for that bearing housing changed August 1955. The bearing housing has a ribbed flange to attach to the bar. Next concave has a simpler cylindrical bearing housing for tapered roller bearings. Its for a 70 and 80 series two way plow 1, 2, and 3 bottom 14", 16" and 18". Left or right hand. It has a clamp with a diagonal strap for a horizontal frame member it looks like. Blades are 16" smooth or 18" notched. Next concave fits No 50, 60, 70 and 80 series 1 through 5 bottom mounted and wheel type plows 10" through 16" plows for B, CA, D, and W D series tractors. Also 9000 series 4 to 7 bottom effective august 1960. Same bearing and bearing housing as the previous coutler and a simpler frame clamp with only two bolts and two diagonal bars. The shanks of the concave coulters have been flat so far. Blades in 16 or 20" smooth and 18" notched. Another concave coulter for 60, 7 3 and 4 bottom plows with rear wheel, 14" and 16". For WD and WD-45 prior to July 1956. Same sturdy casting as the first concave coulter above, slightly twisted and bent flat strut and a two bolt diagonal strap clamp. Blades 16 and 18" smooth, or 18" notched. Now there's a special coulter 50 series 2 and 3 bottom mounted plows 10 through 16" for B, CA, D, & WD tractors. The mount is in front, not on top. The shank is a stub sticking up from a bit of bar stock clamped to some cross member with angle iron. The yoke is nearly horizontal, back to a simple bearing on a 1/2" bolt and blades are 16 or 18" smooth or notched. Now here's the economy version, no clamp, round shank, gentle bends, bent steel yoke, sleeve bearings and blades 16 or 18" plain or notched or 17" with scalloped edge. Has a minimum of parts. Next Coulter Shear Bolt type for 60, 70, 80 and 9000 series plows. 90 degree bends in the shank offered in 3 and 6" offsets (6" required for additional clearance on front posistion of 60, 70, and 80 series mounted plows it says. Plain bearing on a 5/8" bolt, the yoke is made of two straps bolted (all the previous were welded or one piece forgings or castings) to the shank hub. The clamp is three pieces. The outer and center are cast to fit the round shank between them. Then the center piece is also grooved for the horizontal frame member with the third piece a simple diagonal strap. All held with two 5/8" bolts. Blades 18 or 20" plain (but the 20" not available as a service part, only if ordered as machinery) and 17 or 20" with scalloped edge. Now 60, 70, and 80 series mounted plows. Short offset shank (5" offset). Slightly down sloping shank. The shank clamp to the plow frame is two pieces. One piece has a round hole that's split for a bolt to squeeze the round shank and a slot opposite that for the plow frame bar with a bit a flat bar stock to go around the frame. Uses no nuts so the clamp must be tapped. Blades are 16 and 18" notched or plain and 17" scalloped. There are 6 more for 70, 80, and 9000 frames some using the two piece clamp, some the previously described 3 piece clamp. Some with single spring loaded arms, some with rubber. Most with tapered roller bearings inside the hubs that mount the blade so the spindle doesn't turn, its welded to the yoke arm. The last one is a rigid type for 70 and 80 series two way plows 1 to 3 bottom 14 to 18". Has different clamps for different plow frames. So some indeed fit nearly all plow frames, some are quite specific. Gerald J. |
