    Posted: 03 Mar 2017 at 10:52am
Hello everyone,

I just picked up my first tractor, an AC 5020 with loader. I don't have any expierence with tractors but can dumb my way around most things. I plan on going through and changing all fluids and filters this weekend. After going through the tractor and reading up on the manual I have a couple of questions.

1. Where is the hydraulic filter located? The picture in the manual doesn't give much guidance.

2. This is a fwd model and the lever doesn't indicate which position is fwd vs 2wd.

I'm planning on replacing a couple hydraulic lines that aren't looking to hot along with a fitting that has a small leak when I'm doing the filters and fluids. Any advice or tips/tricks would be appreciated!

Thanks everyone!

Don't raise the loader too high with it full.

The injector pump takes oil.  Should be in your manual.

My 5020 does not have a hydraulic filter that I'm aware of, unless it's internal.

there is a hydraulic strainer on the left side of the tractor by the front of the rear end, near the bottom of the trans. there is a circle with two bolts one on the top and one on the bottom.  a brake rod runs in front of it, it's hard to see because it's behind the rear fender. it will remove a small circle and there is a lip that you can pull the strainer out.  I've been using hydro trans from rural king that is Allis chalmers 821 compatible.  I think the 4 wheel drive is engaged when the lever is pulled up toward the seat? can't remember.  these are good tractors but parts are very, very hard to find.  I'll try to post a picture later.  you just need to clean the strainer, unless it's deformed.

as stated above make sure you put oil in the injector.  If your rear tires ain't loaded make sure you have some weight on the back end or the tractor will want to roll over using the loader.  I use a 5ft brush hog and 4 ft tiller, I use it to feed 1000 lb bales to the cows with the 3pt hitch.  if your using it to cut hay, there is a small screen in front of the radiator that gets plugged up with chaf and needs cleaned or it'll heat up.  If you fill the fuel filter with fuel before you put it on you won't have to bleed the lines.

If you have a front wheel lock up don't drive it!!!  it will tear up the gears in the front final drive behind the front wheels and that gets very expensive.

Thanks! That sounds like it meshes with the picture they show of the strainer. Is a universal tractor fluid not compatible with the 821 fluid?

I saw your post about the front locking up and that's what made me think to post this. Thanks for the heads up.

sum hydro trans is for older models.  I use Travler from Tractor supply or Rural King.  It takes 5.5 gal....so ya gotta buy 5 gal +.

A little update after today. Everything went according to plan. She ran great and smoked considerably less as well after. The injection pump seemed to be about dry when I cracked it open so thank you for pointing that out. That thing is a pain in the butt, but I'm glad I did it. I used Travelers as well, Ive heard good things and it meets the standards. Besides the injection pump being kind of a pain to get to, it's actually very easy to do maintenance on. Filling the fuel filter with fuel definitely helped save time from not having to bleed it, and she fired right up. So, thank you for that tip as well! I have a feeling that I was bitten by a bug today and I'm going to end up with more of these orange things around!

I love my allis's. just wish parts were easy to find for the 5020.  If your steering wheel starts to lift up and skipping, there's a snap ring that went on mine.. they are a pain in the .... to get to, but a cheap fix if you catch it quick and don't chew up the pinion.

the 4 wheel is great for going in snow/mud, but it really helps with stopping.  I've had my old wd 45 rear tires just lock up going down a steep hill when it's wet.  but with the 4 wheel engaged it has to lock up all 4 wheels.  we have a large/steep hill to get to our upper pasture and and our drive way is 300+ft up a steep hill, so far the 5020 stops with out an issue.

Parts are an issue but the hunt is fun sometime. I just got a 6140 which is an oddball too. I like to go to AGCO Parts Books and get the part number first. Then I call some of the better vendors here. They have access to parts that AGCO doesn't carry anymore. If that doesn't work Google the part number. I found two bushings for my steering that I need that way. I was also looking for exhaust gaskets and found them with Google. That vendor had a smoking deal on the muffler with the flange that fits the 5020-6140.
AC 6080 (8030,7060,200,175,D-17HC, 6040,160,6140 all gone) Farmall 1066 & 656 Hi-Clear (for sale), White 2-62 High Clearance, JD 4255 Hi Clear.

I didn't mind finding parts for cars that I was restoring, but since the 5020 is the only tractor I have when it brakes I have to get it fixed asap.  I built a trailer with a 3pt set up that works off a winch in case the allis is down and I need to feed the cows.  I do find it a bit funny when you go to a tractor parts web page and type in 5020 all the parts say not available.....
