So to make a.long story short, I dropped the first/reverse idler shaft.

I managed to finagle it back into place by removing the side plate, PTO housing, seat frame etc, etc al.
I pushed up the front and using a brass drift from the back managed to cram it back where it belongs, sorta. It's too far forward, so I just put a couple fender washers in place of the lock plate and keeping my fingers crossed.

If Dr. Allis is around, someone let him know, maybe he can tell me what a time bomb this is.

never heard of that... did the plate come off, or what caused this ?

I found the keeper that bolts on from the read busted an lying in the differential area, and the shaft was jammed into the ring gear spider.
