Like most everyone else, I have a worn out jamming up shifter on my '55 WD45. The ball and socket are worn out, as is the end of the shifter where it goes in the shift rails. The end has been welded up and ground square by the previous owner. I've seen a couple for sale on EBay from time to time, but there's no way to tell if they're junk before buying. Did a search, didn't see any threads with a good answer, so, anyone ever come up with a repair solution for a worn out tower? Trying to use the front end loader is a real PITA when the shifter jams every 5 minutes.
I've considered this. I have an NP435 4spd out of a 1 ton pickup. Considered sawing the worn out socket off the WD shift tower and brazing the 435 socket on. I'd have to modify the 435 lever length to engage the shift rails properly, or change the height or the tower to match the length of the 435 lever. Any thoughts?
Good tractor parts are nearly impossible to find here in the desert. My Dad looked for two years for his '54 before he located a shifter on a 45 frame/carcass sitting in a feild, and it's not great. Any suggestions would be much appeciated.

Aftermarket replacement shifter? I bought one for about a $100 and haven't had trouble since. I got mine from a vender on this site.

Is this just the lever, or the tower as well? The tower socket is worn out too. Didn't know the aftermarket offered shifter parts for 45's. $100 would save me lots of well chosen words strung together to create colorful phrases.

I just got the shift lever and the pin that goes in the top of the tower that the groove in the shift lever slides on. I got mine from Tony Carbaugh http://www.tonystractors.com/ I'm sure other venders here have them too. I've had good luck with Tony for other parts too. I think it was more like $140 - $150, but it's been a couple years ago and I don't remember if I had other stuff on the order. At that time I could get the parts from Agco but it was alot higher.
If the shift tower is badley worn you might want to put a Want To Buy ad here on the classified section and somebody with a parts tractor could help you. I've never got used parts from anyone on this site that weren't as good or better than they were described.

Thanks for the replies fellers. 'Nuther question. My tower has one pin, a curved lever with one groove, the spring loaded rail assembly for reverse, and the trans is the collar type. I've read here and there {and there seems to be some confusion on the subject} that this type of lever/tower sould have two pivot pins instead of one.
If I decide to try a new lever/parts I'll drill the second hole for the pivot pin, just trying to sort out the two pin design change on curved levers, on the off chance something else is different as well.

I've read something like that too. I bought an extra pin, the idea was to drill though the existing hole an put the pin in the other side as I recall. I just put mine together with the new parts (the night before a tractor show of course) with intentions of "fixing" it later. It's been 2 or 3 years and I haven't seen any reason to take in apart and put an extra pin in yet.
