442 baler pickup drive chain

New member in need of help! the drive chain on my 442 pickup popped off, and when i went to put it right, it seemed there weren't enough sprockets and pulley to use up all the slack. What am I missing? Does anyone have a diagram of how the chain should wrap around the sprockets and tensioners?

There's two idiler pulleys on that, are they still there? One to hold it down on the sprocket and one to push it up.
If you want a man to be a successful farmer, give him a Allis Chalmers tractor. If you want him to be a successful mechanic, give him a John Deere

There are two pulleys, but there is an awful lot of chain left over even if I wrap it around the two pulleys and the sprocket.

That makes sense. Thanks a bunch; I'll give this a try. I had been laying the chain in according to a NH schematic with a similar sprocket and pulley system. I hadn't been doubling back from the lower pulley up to the sprocket. This really helps.

I just reworked one of the knife arms--I'm new to balers and farming--adding some weld in the worn spots and silver soldering the flat, worn spot on that little brass spinner, to get the know off the bill hook on one side. Knotting again, but still getting a bale to come out with the twine cut clean about a foot from the knot. Mysterious.

Not going to say I know a lot about your baler, but our New Holland knotter has to have the right twine tension, sharp twine knives, timed correctly, etc. Maybe get a manual on the baler and follow the knotter set up directions and you may have a new machine that works like a swiss watch.

Will do Stan R. I think you're right about the tension. It was really tight even coming out of the twine hopper, so I had better luck when I just bypassed the keeper altogether. How do i get a manual for such an old machine? I'm suspicious of those websites that offer them as a download.
