Differences between 400 and 500 loader mounted on a D series tractor.

I believe the 500's have taller uprights, and the 400's I have seen had oil reservoirs in one of the uprights to supply oil to the front mounted pumps. HTH

The 400 Series came out first. Eg. 445, 414, 415, 417.
They were meant for Allis Tractors that did not have Live Hydraulic.
They required a separate Hydraulic Pump installed in front of the engine and connected directly to the front pulley.
The Loader Hydraulic Oil was contained in the L/H Upright.
The 2 Hydraulic Control Levers were mounted on top of the L/H Upright.
The 500 Series were meant for Allis Tractors with Live Hydraulic.
Eg. D-17 Series IV, D-19
There was no Oil in the Uprights, no Levers on the Upright.
Hydraulic Pump and Valves were original equipment mounted on the Tractor.

500's were made for the wider series side frames(180-190-200,etc). Spacer blocks were then used on narrower tractors with a 500 (D17-19- 170-175).

Hate to rain on anyone's parade, but none of the above is accurate. The 400 had shorter loader arms, and a smaller bolster in the middle, they were for the smaller tractors up to a 19 because you could buy a 419 loader. The 500 series the loader arms were longer, the bolster was much heavier and fit the 17 on up and there was no spacers we have a 517 loader and it mounted direct. The hydraulics were available on both loaders as were the buckets, the frame width is the same. Either one could be ordered with front pump, etc, it was how the dealer packaged it.

Tell me where you put the hydraulic oil for the loader and front pump.

My d15 serries 1 industrial has a 500 loader i was told it was that way from the start bought by a town new. The hydraulic oil goes in the right loader arm the hydraulic pump mounts to the front counter weight and is driven off the front of the crank shaft. I have seen the same setup on d14 industrial loader backhoe setups. The control valve was mounted to the right loader arm as well.

My d15 serries 1 is from 60 or 61 and it has a ts500 loader built by Henry for allis chalmers and Desertjoe has one on his d14 they only produced the d14 from 57 to 60 so the ts500 loader must have been made in that time frame. Joe might be able to tell you what the year of his d14 is.

This may clarify or may add more confusion. Here are two diagrams of the frames.  Apparently in 1965, the loaders may have used the tractor's own hydraulic reservoir rather than the frame tower on the D-19 and D-17 (series IV)?

According to the parts book, the 400 loader could have the reservoir in the frame or not. The frame mounted tank was only needed with the front mounted tank.

I'm guessing the "TS" 500 loader is another breed of cat. You say it was built by Henry.....does anyone know who built the A-C branded loaders? I have some pieces from a New Idea loader that look similar.

I think you meant front mounted pump. Also, according to the manual, ALL 400 & 500 series loaders came supplied with the front mounted pump. Why does the 1965 and up frame not have a reservoir when it would seem all the loaders used the separate front mounted pump? I'm still wondering if the tractor's own reservoir was used in some cases, even with the front pump. Maybe to take advantage of the built-in filter system? I bet some of you guys actually have these loaders and know the REAL answers.

Some models were built by Allis themselves. I believe the models with the tilt cylinders mounted under the loader arm are Allis built.

It think the loader was built in LaPorte. I know that's where you picked them up at. Hauled a lot back to Michigan.

Allis Model 500 Loaders had the Tilt Cylinders under the Boom, same as Model 400 Loaders.

Hi, I know this thread is about 400 / 500 series loader but does anyone have info on the L200 loader? My spool valve is broken and I am trying to figure out what to replace it with.
