While looking out the window at the snow covered ground and 6 degree temperature, I got to thinking how I could make planter plates for my AC planter. Wondering if a 3D printer would do it. I see prices from $200 up to thousands and am thinking one of those cheaper ones would work. The guy up in the mountains, 30 miles away, gets something like $80 per plate. At that price, buying a printer and making 4 plates would be cheaper then buying 4 from him.

nephew has one ... and he made me a S hook just to show how it works and to have something to bring with me. There may be different 'hardnesses' of plastic but this one seems to be hard enough to withstand some planter use. That does not help much but there is probably someone on here that can give you more helpful info.

our local library demonstrated one of those last year, the kids got to keep some kind of plastic ornaments or something they were making . Blew my mind that this could actually be done.
like everything, you probably get what you pay for......so the higher dollar machines would probably make some good durable stuff. |

BEFORE you buy any 3D printer, you have to either find a 3D 'datafile' for whatever plate you want to make OR figure out HOW to 'code' a plate for the printer. You 'might' get lucky and find one on the web..slim though. Pretty sure the 'guy up the road' won't give your his 'plate 'file ! Without the file you're left doing it yourself. Simple really.take a few pictures of the one you have, toss into your computer, add a few 'key' measurements, whrr, buzz, click, click... and a 'datafile' is made, then sened that to the 3d printer and 6-7 HOURS later, ONE plate is made.... Now you DO have the program to convert pictures into a 3D printer filer, right ???????? My smart friend cut his own code, 100% his, used to make spoons, chess pieces (horses are NEAT ! ) and 'grump guy' gnomes. He also designed/built his wood carving CNC machines, biggest is 5 by 9 FEET. News last week was some Ontario company has a 3D printer that's forming the walls of houses. supposedly reduces costs and is faster. Na, no friggin way.... googled '3d seed plate 3d models' ,came back with 26 million hits..... adding your machine name should reduce it a tad.....

Short answer, yes it can be done and they’ll work. Precision of the end product is the trick, with price and plastic type as well. Probably good enough for a planter plate.
The other answer, I have a few AC planter plates I’ll never use and I could get them to you for way less than $80! |

If you have a newer phone, they would have the capability to scan the disk, send that file to a program called Fusion 360, (can be downloaded, and used for free, with a hobbyist license). Once the file is in Fusion 360, dimensions can be set, and adjustments can be made. My brother has several 3D printers, and the one he likes is the PRUSA brand. A couple of years ago, our Mom dropped her 50+ year old hair clips, broke the back end, where the switch, and motor brushes are. My brother took the thing home, and designed a new back end for it using high impact plastic, now you can throw it at the floor, and it wouldn't break.

I realized that my planter has the JD plates. I want to plant pop corn next year. Maybe JD plates are easier to find but it's been quite a few years since JD planters used plates.

There's a company in Nebraska that makes jd plates, at least as of a couple years ago. I'm trying to remember the name, I'm not nearby my manual where I have the paper in it. Might be Lincoln Ag or something like that??

I think the Nebraska outfit is the one that moved to Grand Lake, Colorado, not sure of that but if so the price was $80 per plate. |

Lustran JD plates on eBay 5-10 bucks. Lustran plates are the ones sold by Lincoln in CO. You can cut out the centers of AC metal plates to make adapter drives for Lustrans JD plates. Saw that done and worked well on many acres. Or you can buy the Lustran AC adapters from Lincoln.

Back to the original question.
First, I'm familiar with the size of the part you wish to make, but you need to keep that in consideration when buying a printer. Second, the printer requires a knowledge of CAD/CAM, or some other type program. Also, you will need to obtain an interpreter program to interface the printer with whatever design program you choose. For some, the last points can be a huge problem, for others no big deal. As Jay pointed out, the cad/cam, such as Fusion 360 can be had for free, as well as the interpreter, but one must have a certain level with programing. You CAN get files online for lots of stuff, but most of it is novelty stuff.

dang that limey green is hard to read !! Most of the canned 3D printer software 'should' be able to tell you how much material you need, you don't want to run out.... |

gee the purple ( magenta ?) on black is easier for my old eyes, thanks. Never got into 3D printers..small ones are 'hobbiest' quality and generally slow. Frankly i can't think of anything I NEED to have made, cept for the domed button cap that 'magically' went 'walkabout' from my 24 year old key fob remote starter........sigh... I wonder IF plates made from 'plastic' would be strong enough ? I know the machine will use several types, so 'technically' is should be possible. Tight corners may prove how good they are !

Jay the Deere plates were plastic for years. I only ever broke 1 out of dozens and it was a dumb incident not normal use.

I noted in my 500 series planter Operator's referencing a popcorn plate of #302610.
The measurements listed for this in 1/64's are 20H-20W-24L. ![]() Edited by JoeO(CMO) - 04 Jan 2023 at 11:13am |

I retired from a small manufacturing company; we had several 3D printers that we used for prototyping.
There is a huge difference between the cheapo budget units and the high-end stuff. The cheapo units we had could not utilize the stronger material that would be needed for something like planter plates; we typically used the cheap stuff for the first and second trial runs, then did the final run with the good (expensive) stuff. We then had molds made for production use. |

Hi all, I seemed to be locked out of the forum for a while, finally figured out how to get back on. I'm still considering the printer but thanks to you all, have learned a bunch. As usual, it looks like cheap might not work very well. I don't know what number plate I need for popcorn, is there a seed chart available anywhere that will give me an idea? Thanks again for the help! Joe O, I didn't see your post. That size might just work. I need 4 plates, will do some checking on them, thanks! Edited by JohnColo - 07 Jan 2023 at 2:06am |

Another thought: if you only need 2 plates, the time invested prolly won't pay for the materials returned. Take the seed you want to plant, figure out what size notch it needs, and what population (spacing of notches) then find an old plate, fill the existing notches with bondo or epoxy. Then, if you are a machinist, set it up in a bridgeport mill, or use a hand held grinder, and grind your own notches...

If you buy a printer and get really good with it, start making 7000 and 8000 series dash boards.
