 Topic: 3 point lift cylinder leak/ repair

One of the cylinders is leaking terribly out of the bottom. I have never tried a repair on a cylinder. Is this something that I can repair myself or are there specialty tools and knowledge involved? I am at least an average mechanic I think. if it is repairable here can any of you point me in the right direction where to get the parts needed.
If not , can anyone suggest where to send it or what my best options are?
I use it to set out round bales so I need to get something done as soon as I can.

The XT had 2 different size cylinders. A large rod or a small rod. Can’t always go by serial number of the tractor when ordering parts. I have the large cylinder on my XT, my brothers the smaller rod. They are only 4 serial numbers apart. Just make sure you order the correct kit. He rebuilt one of his this year and said it wasn’t difficult. Thankfully I haven’t had an issue with mine. Make sure you don’t damage or ding any of the parts during disassembly or reassembly. If you have a local hydraulic shop and you have the repair parts they can do it for you.

I suggest buying TWO kits ,maybe 3 ). You said one of the cylinders is leaking,,so odds are the other one may fail soon. Having a 2nd kit, allows you to repair it PDQ, say Saturday night when you NEED the tractor for Sunday morning.. Having a 3rd kit, as a spare means you'll probably never have another leaky cylinder ! It's better to have a $20 seal kit collecting dust than a $20,000 broken tractor down for repair !! I don't know about the 'seal kit supply chain' but my luck would be 'sorry, none in stock...6 week delivery, maybe,.... '

Yes sir.. I agree.. my luck works both ways. The other one will soon follow and the 3rd kit will be something that sits forever!

Did one on the 185 last summer. Worst part was getting the anchor pin out of the front of the cylinder! I'll do the other one when it starts leaking, not before!!!

My XT has the small shaft that uses a Large "Puck" on the end with seals. It used the outer casing to seal. Mine outer casing inside was pitted so I used a cylinder hone to smooth it up some. New seals on the Puck and it is working. Easy to figure out, if you look at the cylinder the small shaft is like 2" or so. The newer style large one used a 3 or 4" shaft.

When in doubt, take the cylinders to a local hydraulic shop. They can replace the seals and inspect the bore and piston for scratches. They will stand behind their work as well.

The serial number on mine is 11327 XT . When I put a caliper on it it measures 1.49 .. I assume that is the small one?
I think I will try it myself if I can find a part number or a parts source.

Still trying to figure out the AGCO parts book but I’m pretty positive number 16(seal kit) is what you need. It’s on page 328 of the 190 parts book. Unfortunately I am unable to navigate to the part number section.

Alvin, Doctor Allis mentioned doing it on the tractor when I had a thread on the 185. I stand in awe of those of you who can do it that way! Having never done one, I wanted it on the bench. Really wasn't a bad job once off the tractor.

I've had work done at a hydraulic cylinder shop. The nice thing is they can fix the cylinder if it is scored or worn. If you just need new seals, it isn't hard to do yourself.

With your average ability you should be able to do this. It isn't rocket science. I understand the apprehension but after you finish you'll say it wasn't that hard.Worst part is not sure what to do next. I doubt you can hurt it by trying it and if it doesn't work out then you can pay the professionals.

Been debating all day. Need to use the tractor about every 4 days and I'm sure quotes are probably fair since they are similar, but this is a pretty small time operation.. hence why I am using a 55 year old tractor and 3 point to feed hay.
Your comment was what I needed! Going to order a couple kits and give it a try.

If you have a service manual on your XT it should describe the overhaul. I don’t have mine handy at the moment but as said above it’s not difficult. Haven’t done a 190 cylinder but have done a few others. Take your time as you disassemble, follow the manual, and enjoy watching your repair do its job leak free. Nothing better than personal satisfaction when you fix it yourself.

Well I finally got tired of dumping more fluid in and was able to plane the time for repair. It was not as complicated as I had thought. It didn't take long to see why the cylinder had such a bad leak.
The big problem now it getting the front inside C clip back on the pin. I messed with it almost 2 hours this afternoon. Finally quit for the day with no luck. It is a pain in the ... Going to try to modify a cheap pair of snap ring pliers in the morning.
Anything I am missing or any a simple solution?

Drill a hole in it thru the snap ring groove and use a cotter pin.

Thanks! I had thought about that , but was not sure if there would be too much lateral movement for a cotter pin to hold. It can not slide too far inside because it slides against a bolt head. Will do it in the morning

My big problem on cylinders has become getting the shaft seal and backup put inside the head. The last one I did gave up and took it to a friends hydraulic shop for he or his help to install. SURPRISE; he has a set of tools that hold the seal in a bend so it can easily be put into the groove. They are in 3 sizes, I now have a set of them in my tool box. Saw that several brands are advertised on U tube.
