3 point cylinder removal

hey folks,


so i was plowing up a field with my 185 when i noticed i was losing power on the 3 point hitch, upon inspection i realized i must have blown a seal cause the cylinder on the left side was spraying fluid from in between the rod and the cylinder head

ive managed to remove the rod pin, but the lower section of the cylinder seems like a real hassle to get off, plus im fairly certain i can rebuild it without taking it all off completely anyway.


my question is though, how do i remove the cylinder cap? i imagine its a thread but id rather be sure before i start prying. Ive also read else where on the forum that theres some sort of retaining ring or something in the oil hose connection? anyone? anything?

I believe the cylinder for a 185 prior to s/n 12800 is the same one as used on a D17serIV.  (Someone correct me if it's not). Later tractors use a different cylinder.
If so, I have a parts breakdown w numbers for the seals etc.  that I can send you, just let me know. 'Can send in PM.

The cylinder lower end should be held with a pin that has a clip inside the lower 3-pt mounting bracket.
Go to AGCO online parts books, sign in as guest and look up 185 Hydraulic pages
It's best to take the cylinder off to do any repairs.
And makes it much easier to see if there's any deep grooves in the wall.  Big screwdriver or cotter-pin puller can get it out.

The seal retainer is a threaded ring with spanner wrench holes; should come apart easily.

ok, ill give taking it off a go, wish me luck though cause if this pins as rusted in as the rod pin i may be a while Wacko....

as for the seal retainer, i too thought it would be just a set of spanner holes, but i cant seem to find any, on the sides or the face of the head..

any other ideas? Ill try and get some pics up once ive got the whole thing off

On the left side it's way easier to work with if you take off the battery box to remove the lower pin. If it's the bigger cylinders there will be a snap ring you can see after removing the fitting. Move it forward to the deeper groove, then rod will pull right out.

so in my attempt to try and get the cotter out, i managed to break the straight part that slides into the pin,  just enough to block the pin from sliding out.. i tried filing it but to no avail..

anyone know if itd be alright to remove the "casing" that the barrel of the cylinder pins onto? I dont wanna pry this thing off only to open a new bag of troubles with it.

I believe there is a bolt behind the pin so you won't be able to. There is an open space in the housing, you can take e torch and melt of what's left of the hairpin without harming anything else. You may need to rotate the pin to get both sides. If you are working on the left you will need to remove the battery box to make your job easier.
