I have a 180 with a 2800 diesel engine that I am going to rebuild. My plan is to install a turbo after it is rebuilt.
My question is, what is the difference in the (naturally aspirated) 2800 vs. the (turbocharged) 2900 engine? Should I look for a rebuild kit for a 2900 if I'm going to add a turbo?

I would. The turbo piston is slightly smaller above the top ring to prevent gaulding having said that - many a 2900 ran thousands of hours with the old pistons as in the 2800.
The 2900 had an oil cooler, and a plug in the back that forced oil into the cooler route... many an engine has fallen prey to non oiling due to not understanding the oil flow. Again if you are adding a turbo and not turning up the fuel you are ok. If you raise the hp you are possibly looking at a heating issue of the coolant and the oil. If you do add the 2900 oil cooler the water pump will be higher and will necessitate the shroud relocation. Lots of things will pop up one never thinks about when starting to make changes.. |

As long as I own it, the tractor's farming days are over. I would like to pull it in our local "stock" class (up to 150 hp.), which means the pump will be turned up and maybe bigger injector tips. Other than that, the toughest thing it will do is a hay ride or parade. It won't have any sustained hard work.

in that case, I would find a used set of pistons from a combine or other turbo'd engine , pull the sleeves and check for major pin holes, turn the sleeves with new orings, hone the sleeves to deglaze them , install new rings and have the cam reground with the money saved. A set of 7080 tips or injector assys will fit in and look for a pump... if you are saying they dyno check the hp in a low weight class that is one thing, if you are pulling in a 150 hp stock heavy wt class, just stick to the parades and hayrides w/o the turbo... :-)

Brings back some fond memories from the very late 1970's/early 1980's of three 180 tractors that I helped with "Farm Stock Pulling".... All had 18.4 X 38 rear wheels and ran 6th gear in a 7000 or 7500 lb class. All had D-21 injection pumps with the leaf springs removed, two governor weights removed (33 to 3500 RPM) and 7080 injector tips set to 2500 psi. One had 16 to 1 pistons and a 190XT V-band clamp turbo. The next had 15 to 1 pistons and a 200 B-series turbo. The last had 14 to 1 pistons (from a 6080) and used a 7060 turbo. This one was always the winner with the other two right behind. All three of these were used on the farm 9 months of the year. When late June came along, pumps and injectors (and one turbo) were swapped, the big tires were installed and away we went for the Summer. Those were the days..........sigh.

I don't think they ever dyno the tractors in this class, but most of the guys in the class seem to respect the 150 hp. rule. I'm not saying some aren't over 150, but not a lot over. There isn't an awful lot of smoke or ridiculously high rpms.
The guy that normally wins the 6800 lb. class drives a (VERY NICE) AC 200. I believe he runs 7th gear in the 6800 lb. class on some of the soft (horse) tracks that don't take a lot of power. He sometimes visits this forum (Hi Kevin!). |
