Hi all, I have both a 1929 20-35 E and 1930 25-40 E Allis- Chalmers and am needing to know what mags and carburetors came on each. I THINK the Kingston L3 carb came on the 25-40. My parts books don't list what the exact carbs/mags are, just the Allis order number from back in the day. I know some Eisemann mags were used on them, and have heard of people going ahead and switching them for reliability reasons. I'm not too concerned with that, I'd like like put them close to original again.

On another note, I've heard that Allis also put a Wico AP mag as a replacement later down the road. Any ideas?

'29 20-35 had a Kingston L3 carb and an Eiseman GS4 magneto. This mag has automatic advance and no manual advance/retard control, as did the previous years using a GV4 magneto.  I have a '29 20-35 and a '28 20-35.  I have been running the Eisemann mags for 20 years now and have had no problems with reliability.
The 25-40 may have also used the Kingston carb, but most I've seen have the Zenith 6CEV carb.

25-40s were originally equipped with C6EV Zenith carburetors. A lot of the C6s were replaced with a later model but the number escapes me. Fred Lucabaugh will know the part number if he sees this post.

25-40 used an Eisemann G4 magneto.

Did Allis change the throttle quadrant/control on the '29's? I know they went away with having to manually set the spark advance. Mine has the quadrant for an earlier 20-35 I believe.

Just updating everybody on the serial #. It is in fact 17246, making it a 1929. One thing I'm still scratching my head about is that I was told the oil tube on the side of the block (under carb/air breather) is from an earlier tractor prior to '29. These tractors had a different oil pump setup. Im just curious if the engine was swapped? Just hate having unanswered questions!

I think most of the 29' tractors that did away with the spark advance had the 2 sided quadrant, but had no lever or linkage on the side for the spark advance

The 20-35 block has waterpump, governor, and magneto mounted in line on the left side of the block.  The 25-40 block will have a front mounted water pump (behind the fan, belt driven) and governor and magneto on the right side of the block.  The 20-35 oil tube is held on by clamps and is much smaller diameter, while the 25-40 oil tube is held on with a banjo type connection at each of the ports.  The oil tubes are not interchangeable.

Thank you for the reply! But I'm aware of the differences between my 25-40 and 20-35. This has more to do with the mag/carb combinations on each!

In regards to the mag on my 1930 25-40, I've been told a G4 Eisemann or GL4 Eisemann were the proper mag. Is there a difference in these? Could it have used a GV4 mag as well?
