Not sure if anyone has any information on this but I am looking to replace my cracked cylinder head on my 1958 D17 with casting number AM4472-3 my question is that I have seen several other heads for this motor but they have different casting numbers like, AM4472VG, AM3820, and AM4659 as well as variations of this head. They all appear to be the same as far as the eye can see. I know the 3820 is for a WD but its all the same 226 motor. Does anyone know what is the difference with all the casting numbers for the heads and if currently have a 4472-3 can i replace it with a different casting number or do i need to get the same casting number for my D17?

There were MANY casting numbers over the years. A 1958 G-226 engine (not a W-226 engine) would have had 3/8" long spark plug threads and 30 degree intake seats. Those heads were discontinued and replaced with a new casting (different casting #) that accommodated 3/4" long spark plug threads. That is the head you want if you find a good one. They were used from about 1960 up thru the last 175 gas tractor in 1975 ??

My service manual says, "Effective with Engine S/N 17-17293 and up" used the 14 mm x 3/4" reach spark plug.
My 1959 D17 has the long reach plugs, serial # D17-24174 (not engine #). I can not find a engine serial number on my tractor. Are Engine and tractor numbers the same? 1959 started with 16500 so, that was the change. Edited by frnkeore - 29 May 2019 at 12:56pm |

Engine s/n on a gasser is directly behind the carb air inlet tube...….17-XXXXXX. If nothing is there, it has had a new block installed one time in the past. New blocks have no s/m stamped in them. Chassis s/n are never the same as engine s/n.

Thanks for the information DrAllis. I am guessing that from your response any of the casting numbers for a G-226 would work but the 3/4 inch is more desirable? Do you happen to know the casting number for 3/4" long spark plugs and what is the reason for them being more desirable? I can find much information on what casting number correlate to what years or changes.

My Engine is 17-10742-M and tractor is D17 12677 so this head is off a series 1 tractor to my knowledge and based on your information from your manual it should have the shorter plugs; I haven't measured them yet. So the Casting number I currently have of AM4472-3 would be the casting for the shorter plugs on the earlier heads. I see a lot of more of the AM4659 castings out there but nothing that describes the plugs on them. Anyone know what plugs would be in that casting?

A change from 3/8 to 3/4 reach plugs, would normally be made, because of a localize heat problem.
A 3/4 reach plug would put the plug closer to water jacket cooling. A 3/8 plug leaves no material, to insulate the plug from the combustion chamber. If there were cracking or pre-igiition problems, that would be a reason to make a change. |
