I think my 200 may have alternator and/or regulator issues. Is there a way to test the alternator while on the tractor? This is the original set up with tach drive on back of alternator and regulator under the cover of the instrument cluster. Alternator and regulator have not been touched for 15 years and have worked perfectly. Starting this morning, with heater fan on, the needle on amp meter is slightly left of vertical and with headlights on, even farther to the left.  Thanks for any help!!!

Have you tried using a voltmeter on the battery while running?

If it's not charging, check the easy things first. Check all the connections on the alternator and the regulator, including (actually especially!) the ground.

Jumper wire from the HOT terminal on the alternator to the wire inside the small square plug while the engine is running. This puts the alt at 100% charge. If that doesn't get the ammeter back in the plus side, the alternator is weak and has problems. If it goes into the plus side well, you prob need a regulator.

I wish that I could lock that piece of information into my memory bank for future reference!

If you been having cold, wet weather, make sure the VR is grounded correctly. Might be starting to lose the ground. Clean the Battery posts as well. Might be losing the connection at one of the terminals. Do the easy stuff first. If it's been fine all along and all of a sudden it started having issues, it's probably something dumb....

Might not be nothing more than a loose or old belt. Older belts don't do as good as you might think, even when they look OK.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Dr. Allis, when you say "HOT" terminal, I assume you are referring to the larger orange wire? The dual belts are tight and terminals look good. Going to get it in the shop in a few days and check battery connections. Replaced batteries 3 yrs. ago and have not checked them since. With the cab, checking the batteries is much more of a job than open station tractor. Thanks everyone for the help!!!!

I have had that happen too; a belt that was properly tensioned and you would swear it should work, but still slipped (silently).

Being inherently lazy, I always do the easy stuff first before chasing obscure connections, etc.

Tighten belt if needed.

Connect voltmeter

Full-field the alternator as mentioned above by the good Doctor, this will tell you which direction pursue.

Good luck! Big smile

Well, as usual, Dr. A was right again. Did the "jumper wire" test and amp meter did not move at all. Took alternator to a shop and it's output was zero. Should get it back in a couple of days. Thanks to all who replied.

We offer Starter, Alternator, Gennie repairs and conversions if interested. Coarse, you would have to ship em', but using the USPS Flat rate system, keeps the shipping costs down...

The shop that was in Danville (Drakeford Bros.) is gone, But one of the guys, maybe a brother?, started a small shop of his own in Stanford. It's out in the country a bit. Just a small shop behind his house, but it's nice and looks like he definitely knows what he's doing. Goes by Drakeford Rebuilders. 859 238 7665
