Dan,
That's probably about right on needing a little thicker fluid in the older PS unit too.

Still looking good. You're going to have it all fixed up and ready to go. It's fun to see your work. Your process was better than mine. I always seem to paint THEN fix.
Just think of the syrup load you could haul with that thing!

Dave,
Good talking with you today about Allis tractors!
I did get the other hub cleaned up and the 17 is ready to get the front tires put back on.
This afternoon I added a new plug in in the bed of the truck for the fifth wheel trailers. Needed this for a year or two.
Regards,
 Chris

Folks,
Completed the painting of the D17 front rims. In for drying and should be able to get the tires mounted in a few days. Weather is cold and rainy!
(my fix on the gas tank may not have been good. Have to take a close look at that tomorrow.)
Hope things are good in orange land.

 Chris

Chris you got me with that first sentence I stopped two words short when I read it and thought wow that was fast. Lol
Bummer about the gas tank.   I wonder if getting it lined right now would fix it. I had to have mine lined because of bad rust and mine was leaking around the fill neck as well I had to replace the fill neck but you might want to check there the rain was running right around the outside of my fill neck and into the tank when I pulled the fill neck it was rusted about 90% of the way around with almost nothing left holding it in.

Remove PS vented plug after getting the current oil good and warm from use. Drain bolster and leave open overnight so you get as much as possible of the old fluid out. Soak vented plug in gasoline overnight and blow out same with compressed air via bottom hole and you will have it clean when air easily passes through the dimples at top sides. I do a final clean with carb cleaner, blow it out and reinstall after using a couple quarts of universal hyd fluid to "rinse" out the bolster before final filling to 3/8" or so above the gear.

Tim,
Great information on the maintenance/cleaning of the power steering reservoir for the D17.
This will help me and hopefully some others with this option on their tractors too.

Folks,
Good evening! Thanks for checking in on me.

Got to the tire shop and had the 5.50-16's mounted for the WD NF.

During the tire switch: Here is Dad's WD with the new 5.50 on the right and 6.00 on the left.

The WD with new painted wheels and correct size tri ribs.

Over to the D17

The tank is dry too!
Regards,
 Chris

Those wheels and tires look great. It's a shame the rest of the tractor isn't as shiny. Hug

You need to find some parts you can take inside where it is warm to work on. There must be something like that.

You have the same problem that I do Chris......no place warm to work on these ole girls.  Wish I had a warm garage to work in.  Maybe one of these days....
NICE JOB on those rims!! and I'm glad to hear that the tank isn't leaking!  Next to the brakes, these gas tanks are about the next biggest problems...
I need to look at the brakes on my D-17 I...  I'm hoping it's just an adjustment, but I don't think so... UGH!!

Ted,
I have not done brakes on a WD or D series. Seen lots of pictures and the stories of the rusted lower pivot pins. A tough job due to the tight locations too. Unless maybe you pull the finals all the way off. Still have to get the brakes back in through the smallish openings.

Yes a heated shop would be nice! I have some heat in the garage attached to the house. Its 50 out there. (should be out there working) Just dont like making a lot of fumes/ dust with out being able to open the doors.

I have some non Allis projects lined up for this spring too. Brought home a 127 Cub Cadet from my daughters, that needs the engine rebuilt. Also have a Massey Ferguson 8hp lawn tractor that I am supposed to have ready for your local tractor show this July.
Regards,
 Chris

Dan,
Yes thats how I got the rims done. They were next to the warm wood stove for a day.
Post a picture of your D17 if you get a chance.

Chris,
I'm painting my 7000 right now so again, I'm not suggesting you do something I wouldn't.

Fortunately though I do have a warm shop to work in. 16F here this morning, with a stiff north wind. Too darn cold!

Play farmer, Do you have a thread on the 7000? Sounds like a big project. How far are you taking it down?

Folks,
I have been doing some little things. Minor cosmetic issues.
The grill mesh screen had been damaged several times. This looks to be a replacement grill at some point since it is cream on the inside also. And I believe that these 1958 models should have been PO#1. My plan is to go to my local steel dealer and get some expanded metal to match.
Grinding off the welds that held the old screen. Kind of like surgery with a chainsaw. Must go carefully.

Frame is free at last.

Expanded metal size is 24.25 inches across by 21.5 inches top to bottom. Just in case you have to do one of these:)

Frame shined up and the dents and dings improved with some hammer and dolly work.

This is a very delicate piece. Will have to be careful during new screen fit up, to get the correct fit on the tractor!

OK on to a couple other questions:

Is this brake rod the correct shape?
Just seems a little awkward to engage and disengage?

On the PD lever there is a cross pin that moves with the thumb control.
It moves to far towards the tractor center and bind the PD from going into High range.
I think the PD lever will have to come off and it will have to be adjusted?
Pin in down position:

Cross pin in up position

On a positive note I pulled out the light switch (second click) and had a gage light working!! Wahoooo!:)

Thanks for checking on me. I do need supervision!
Regards,
 Chris

Folks,
 Good evening!
Pulled the power director handle off the D17 and tweaked the rod that pushed down the cross pin. Bent it to apply some constant pressure outward to keep it from binding on the trans housing. Lubed up the moving parts and reinstalled. This should stop the binding going into high range.

Took the headlights off after checking that there was power to the terminal block behind the rad. but the lights had internal wiring problems. Pulled off the lights and proceeded to pound out the damage inside the bucket. Some welding will be required then clean up and may need new lights. These are about 5-5/8 dia lights (i think they are bigger than a WD headlight. Head light rings had some dings and dents removed too.
Checked the buckets back on the tractor and the straightening pretty much took care of the cross-eyed look:)

Regards,
 Chris

Folks,
Picked up the expanded metal for the grill replacement. Will get some pictures when I get it fit up. Looks to be a good match.
Worked on the center ramp for the trailer this afternoon. This will allow me to load the narrow front end tractors much safer.

Play farmer, Do you have a thread on the 7000? Sounds like a big project. How far are you taking it down?
Just a few bits and pieces threads, nothing putting it all together yet.

I'm just doing a "field grade" job on this one, as I 100% plan on using it this Spring. All of the orange was stripped down to the bare metal and fixed as needed, the maroon was just cleaned up and painted.

The dash was a mess, I built a new one of those. The wiring was a mess, I thought I had that figured out, I gave up on that a few nights ago and decided to just run all new wires. I did that on my D17, I should have done it on this one to begin with. Old wires get brittle and broken and don't carry current very well.

The seat pivots were worn, the steering was worn, the drawbar mounts were worn. I turned out new pieces on my lathe and have those all tightened up.

Mechanically I just did the basic all new filters and fluids and mostly all new hydraulic lines.

I will freely admit I have dragged this one out a bit. I'm a snowmobiler but with our lack of snow this winter this gave me a nice project to work on. I also had knee surgery in January so this was a great putz around project.

I'm about running out of things to do on it. Having said that, I was looking at my front tires, then my 7040 parts tractor and hmmm...yup, I'm thinking maybe this weekend the front axle from the 7040 is going to find its way under the 7000. Heavier axle, beefier tires - why not!

Steve,
I have just been doing a few things to repair some visible items. Couple joy rides also.
Have welded up the rusted holes in the headlight buckets. Welding rusted areas is always a challenge on thin metal.
I will try to get some pictures of the grill repair as it comes together. Test fit the screen to the frame tonight. (its going to be cream, sorry:))
Opened and cleaned the power steering fill port/vent and added a quart of ATF.
Found a new small leak of antifreeze from the head gasket near the rear left side.:(
Regards,
 Chris

Play Farmer,
your not dragging it out It just takes time! I get to play all day with old stuff! Some days are good others I go back a few steps. It sounds like you have made a lot of progress on a good working tractor! Building a new dash sounds like a challenge to me!

Chris double check the head bolts if you pull the head. I replaced the head gasket twice before I realized that my bolts where stretching and one broke but I was wicked lucky it actually came back out of the block with the bolt broken in half but not all the way through if you feel them release funny when torquing them stop turning that was how I got that bolt out and it broke right in the middle of the threads. I should have kept it just for the story of it actually comming out in one peice.
