just brought home my first d 17. its very slow cranking and im not sure if its 12 or 6 volt. positive or negative ground? this thing is a wiring disaster but it purrs like a kitten! any help is appreciated.

is it a diesel or gas?  there's a difference in wiring.

ok, jumped the gun...figured out its 12 volt and pos. ground. it just has 2 six volts hooked together. im going to try a new battery and hope it flies. now on to the leaks.

Get a multi-meter.  They're about 5 bucks at an auto parts store.  Turn the voltage dial to 20v and stick the 2 pointed leads onto your battery.  If it shows around 12, you've got a 12 volts system.  If it shows around 6, well...you get the idea.
 
Also, your black and red lead for your meter need to be plugged into the appropriate hole in the meter.
 
When it shows the 12 or the 6, it may display a - sign by the number.  If it does, your polarity is reversed.  You can the figure out the + and - terminals on the battery, then trace both to find the ground.

Having a D17D also, I recommend getting two 1000 CCA batteries and running two cables to the starter. Makes a huge difference in cold weather cranking.

its running! just got it off the trailer as it started to rain. corrosion on the wires everywhere! ive just got one 1000 cca battery on it right now and cleaned all the terminals. i gotta get new cables!

Get 00 gauge if you can find them. I have two 02 gauge cables on mine.  Mine would start cold (warm weather) on the one battery, but it wasn't enough to restart hot. A 2nd battery and all was fine.
