Hey guys,
I have a 55 WD 45 Diesel that has been recently overhauled. It runs great the only issue I am currently having is the hydraulics are not functionING properly. When I have my 6ft roto-tiller on the back (or anything heavy) I can't keep it at the level I want. It is either all the way on the ground or all the way up. I try to find the right "balance" but it still creeps back down towards the ground. Am I low on fluid or is there another issue I should be looking for?

You need to utilize the decal on the side of the battery box or get an Owners manual. There are 3 settings for the hydraulic pump and yours isn't set up for "HOLD" position control.

My battery box side cover is missing so I don't have that decal. I will check the owners manual, just thought I could get some input from the people here. Thanks

There is a detent for the center position on my WD45 gas I had to tap the detent ball to make a better seat for it to hold neutral position. Randy

Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level yet ? Do you know where to check and what type of fluid to add and where ?

i'm having the exact same problem with my WD45. Rear lift is always either creeping up or down. Can't seem to ever find the neutral detent. I have manual and followed instructions for "hold" position. Fluid level is good. This isn't fun. Thoughts?

Well,it makes a difference on how the little link rod from the main control lever is synced to the hold valve....and the main lever needs positioned right to start out. Fiddle with it and pay attention to how it all works...you'll make improvements.

If you can’t make it stay by properly setting the system for the “ lift and hold” feature, just hook a chain from the liftshaft to the lower arms.

Well, I followed the manual and set everything up for the "hold" configuration. It works fine...except it doesn't hold position lol! I have to play with the lever to get it "just right" to where the lift will nearly hold position...but it still creeps up or down ever so slightly. There's a bit of play in the linkage, but it wouldn't matter if there was no play. If it has a "neutral detent", it must be 1/10th of a millimeter wide! Thinking of taking it in to a local tractor repair shop, but I trust those guys even less than AUTO repair shops. BTW, I use this tractor for Brushhogging, rear blade, but most crucially, a water wheel implement and bedlifter--those two I need hold position absolutely!

Go to a D17 series IV, or 170, 175....much better hydraulic system and tractor for what you are doing.

If the "HOLD" detent is working properly, there is no doubt when it clicks in place. That doesn't mean the hold valve will hold if there's something wrong with it internally.

So I disconnected each linkage one-by-one to isolate everything. Linkages had a small amount of play, but were otherwise in good working order. I took the hold position valve linkage off so I could isolate the pump. Lever on pump moved well and I finally felt that neutral detent--it was plain as day. I hooked everything back up and I can't feel the detent at the operating lever. To even move that lever I have to bump it or really yank on it. I went down and separated the plates using screw "B". With only one plate on, the operator lever is nice and smooth and neutral is readily felt (but obviously it doesn't hold position). But, once screwed in "B" and locked the plates together, the operator lever is difficult to move, jerky, and I can't feel the neutral detent. Rams still creep up and down. I'm thinking the issue is with the hold valve? It shouldn't cause jerky/binding operator lever operation right?

Update: Being the WD45 is my first tractor, I really don't know exactly how a 68 year old tractor SHOULD work when it's new. Take the lift lever for example; it's stiff/rough and really didn't work well.
So, I took the Hold valve apart. Pretty simple. I found that the cylinder was severely binding at one end. The cylinder was rusted, corroded, pitted. I smoothed it out with some oil and sand paper and put it back together. Moves like a knife thru butter now. Neutral detent is easy to feel and even better, THE LIFT HOLDS POSITION!
