Working on restoring my father-in-law's father's 55 B. So far we have it converted over to 12v and running. Thought we would take it for a short spin today and it wouldn't go into gear. It would just grind. Is there anything we can do, check, clean, lube, etc before breaking it apart?

Can you shift it into gear with the engine off?  These are prone to clutch disc sticking to pressure plate/flywheel.  Hence the clutch hold down latch...

It could be what is called transmission free wheeling. That can be caused by very little oil in the transmission or loose bearings To put the proper drag(resistance) on the transmission you would have to remove the torque tube from the transmission. If it is free wheeling the transmission will stop turning while holding the clutch down for a minute or two in the worse cases. If the clutch is sticking it will not stop turning on its own while the clutch is down.

With the engine off, put it in gear and have someone sit in the seat and push the clutch in. Then gently rock the tractor back and forth. If the clutch is released, the problem will be as Dick L described. If the engine turns, the problem will be the clutch disc sticking to the flywheel. It might release itself. Just ensure the magneto is shorted out or the ignition is shut off.

or you could tie the back end to a tree, the front end to a truck ( so that it doesn't pull a dragster move on you and come up) and start it in gear with the clutch pushed down.

Whatever you do, make sure the front end is tied to something that it can't pick up. YOU DON'T Want to do what I DID!

My Dumb A$$ was pulling another half-B off a trailer with the one I had when the clutch went over-center (missing the stop) and tried to flip on me. IT WILL FLIP OVER BACKWARDS if you let it....  I had to jerk the gearshift back with all I had, and when I did it went smoothly into reverse! So now I have to Hit it with my fist forwards.......
Shortly after cleaning out my pants, I correctly repaired the clutch Pedal Rod, tightening it up and installed a KILL SWITCH!. Censored

Yes.  It will shift fine with the engine off.

Is there something I can do to unstick it?  I read in another thread to mix laundry soap and water in a weed sprayer, remove the starter and soak that whole area down.  Then rinse and see if that helps.

What's your thoughts?

Can you crank the engine over in gear with the clutch down without the tractor moving?

I don't want to assume anything.  Have you tried adjusting the clutch or clutch rod?

It couldn't hurt to check it, but it may be a low percentage chance that is it.  Look at this thread:

The rocking back and forth with the clutch blocked fixed it.

Thanks guys. Now onto the leaking manifold.
